A rich, Welsh Single Malt Whisky by Penderyn Distillery in Bacon Beacons, Wales aged first in ex-Bourbon casks, then finished in reconditioned Wine casks before being bottled at 46% ABV. It has an aromatic birth with notes of toasted granola, honey, fudge, vanilla, tropical fruits, including mango, papaya, guava & plantains; while a rich life adds notes of vanilla creams, toasted barley, toffee, Dutch-apple pie, dark chocolate, nuts & cinnamon; that lead to a balanced death of medium length with notes of flowers, Banana fritters, vanilla flan & cider. NOSE Tropical and orchard fruit, vanilla taffy, fruit gems, honey and cinnamon with a touch of oak. This is a lovely aroma that comes through soft but heavy. PALATE Exact carbon copy, but a tad richer and deeper. I’m enjoying the overall profile of the Penderyn Rich Oak Single Malt. It’s warm, bold and expressive. It’s awesome. FINISH Medium -> Tropical fruit candy, vanilla taffy and some malty sweetness dissolve to turn a tad metallic and oaky.
Unsurprisingly, this is very oaky and all the tastes that go with that - a woodiness, lots of vanilla, and some secondary peppery spices. It’s decently smooth, but could be a bit smoother (the finish is a little hot for my taste), and is somewhat one-dimensional, making this a good but not great whiskey.
This one has a distinct apple on the nose, followed by a sweet rich apple. When it hits the palate, you immediately go "wow apple" then the apple fades into a light fresh apple. The finish is not long, but long enough to know what that flavor is, yep, you guessed it, apple.
Nose: Green apple, slight nail varnish. Hints of tropical fruits. The nose softens after a while. Palate: Creamy texture. Light tropical fruit, mango especially. Barrel spice creeps in. Finish: Vanilla, developing baking spice. The tropical fruit lingers.
On the nose, there is plenty of fruit, including apple and banana. Vanilla and oak are at the front of the first sip, with the latter lingering for a bit. Rich, full and probably worth trying, though I think the alcohol keeps it from being cohesive.
