About this bottle

Ramazzotti Amaro was created in 1815 by Ausano Ramazzotti who owned an herbalist shop in Milano. The bitter liqueur includes 33 herbs and roots including angelica root, bitter orange, cardamom, clove, galangal, myrrh, rose petals, star anise, sweet orange, and vanilla. Ausano opened up a cafe near La Scala theater where his customers could consume his amaro instead of coffee. Although it was crafted in Milan, it is now produced in Canelli, Piemonte.

It was a toss-up between this and Meletti for which amari I preferred the least in my tasting, but this one edged it out because it's just a touch less sweet and tastes better neat. On the nose you get mint, cloves and lemon peel. The palate continues the citrus, with a little orange peel and only a touch of bitterness. However, it is pretty sweet and pretty syrupy which holds it back in my opinion. The finish is actually pretty long, with some chocolate and root beer notes. Ramazzotti is relatively popular and probably can be found in a well stocked bar, but I wouldn't say it's essential and it's not unique enough to warrant buying this over some of the other amaro out there. I'm not saying it's bad, because it's pretty good. It kind of reminds me of a soda, maybe a mix between Coca Cola and root beer. I have used it in cocktails, but not as often as some others, probably on par with Meletti. Ramazzotti is a bit more expensive than Meletti, but only by a few bucks, and is a touch better neat. It goes down smooth, is inoffensive and gets the job done. It has the same score as Meletti, but that's only because it was so hard to differentiate the two and Meletti is a touch cheaper so you could say it has a bit more value. At the end of the day though, if I had to choose between the two, I would go with Ramazzotti.

N: if you infused orange and anise into root beer, this is what I think it'd smell like P: early anise, with orange and floral rose notes mid palate, roots and spice on back toward finish...bitterness comes in about mid palette for me F: Clean spice, with lingering anise/citrus blend Oily but not heavily viscous. Have used it in Black Manhattans, hanky Pankys instead of Fernet (to remove the menthol). Also great on ice. Would be good with seltzer but I'm favoring nearly 100% alc based drinks at the moment.

For the price a great amaro almost like a fancy amaro khalua. Anise and licorice and light cinnamon flavors contrast nicely with sugar syrup. Smooth for 30%. Not too bitter. Good on the rocks or maybe with a whiskey cocktail

Spicy and sweet amaro with a nice kola taste. Love it in a Manhattan or a Pumpernickel. Solid cocktail ingredient but not too syrupy if neat, as well.

A very good place to start to get a feel for Amari. Dark chocolate, Tabacco, herbs, spices. Great on the rocks after dinner

The strong kola nut flavor with the mix of herbs make the taste reminiscent of Dr. Pepper.
