A rich, aged Rum crafted by Tito Cordero, Golden Barrel Award's 2011 Master Rum Blender of the Year from Venezuela. Expect huge juicy sweetness & flavor thanks to its maturation in bourbon barrels & 2-year finish in sweet Pedro Ximenez casks. It has an aromatic birth with notes of almond, hazelnut, cocoa, toffee apples & hints of cooked banana, juicy sherry & mince pies, cinnamon & potpourri; while a rich life adds notes of buttery biscuit base, cinnamon, dried apricots, dates, Nutella & predominantly sweet pipe tobacco, that led to a long & complex death with notes of fruit, sweet, thick honey & allspice. June 2017
About this bottle
Diplomático Ambassador, named for 18th-century distiller Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, differs from the brand’s usual style by using 100% pot-still rum rather than a column-and-pot blend. The rum is aged for 12 years, bottled at a higher proof, and finished for two additional years in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks after ex-bourbon maturation. Presented in a wooden display case.

If i could clarify what a liquidfied bruleed banana tasted like i would tell someone to try this rum. Even the alcohol aspect of this rum tastes like a beautiful ripened banana for banana bread. Has a clean finish but do feel a numbing of my tongue so it could do well with a chilled glass. Would not recommend ice or water, I'd be worried it would dull the natural carmelized flavor of the rum. Absolutely delicious!
I have never smelled anything better honestly. Adding PX aging to the typical ex-bourbon barrels had the best of effect on this quality drink. It is complex with citrus fruits, oranges, lemon zest, black pepper and more spices, which are coming from the pot stills. You can feel exactly the same on the palate too, finishing with a touch of tobacco smoke and more spices. Astonishing stuff.
12 years in bourbon + 2 in PX casks = not even a hint of sweetness. Foster son of Diplomatico range. Oak, 99% dark chocolate, lots of cigars, dusty dried fruits. Depress rum, making you even more sick and tired. Not for vacation.
Nose is very mild. Sweet floral and melon. Taste is very mild with lots of sweet notes including molasses and toffee. It finishes strong with coffee, dark chocolate and spice. Not super complex but very pleasant.
So good and smooth. The best rum I've tasted so far, which you would hope in this pricerange of course. Smells great and has lots of flavours (like the expert review mentiones) which complement each other perfectly.
