I'm primarily a Bourbon and Rye drinker... with an occasional Scotch thrown in. However, several weeks back the manager of a restaurant, that my wife and I went to, noticed I was interested in/ordering Bourbon. He asked me if I liked Rum — to which I told him, yes — but mainly dark rum. His eyes lit up and shortly thereafter, he brought me over two samples of Rum to try: Kirk & Sweeney and Diplomatico Reserva. They both impressed, so I ordered a glass of the Diplomatico. Soon after, I bought a bottle... The color of this Rum is a deep mahogany. Reminds me of mole. The palate is sweet with flavors of dark cherries, and I'll be damned if I'm not getting "grape jelly", as well. This Rum is aged in Bourbon barrels, and you can taste it. It's probably why I like it so much — it was a smooth and seamless diversion away from my whiskey comfort zone. I've had the usual rums: Captain Morgan, Myers's Dark, etc. But this stuff is something else. I don't dare mix this. It deserves to be sipped neat or with an ice cube. I prefer the latter.
About this bottle
This is the Venezuelan distillery’s flagship rum, called “exclusiva” as a tribute to their 18th century founder Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, who was always in search of exclusive flavors for his rums. It’s a blend of 12 year old copper pot-still rums made from both molasses and sugarcane honey, aged in ex-bourbon barrels.

Nose- caramel creme brulee with a hint of maple. There is a bit of smokiness just like the crust on creme brulee. Palate- Greated by flat cola. This is a sweet treat! I am hit with a mouthful of brown sugar and boozy maple syrup. There is a playful note of pineapple in the background. This all fades to chewy caramel and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. This is really nicely done! Finish- no burn whatsoever, but a gentle warming feeling. That maple syrup goes out on a stack of pancakes. Overall- If you are toying with the idea of diving into rum, this is the bottle you should buy. For its inexpensive price it gives you all of those nice sweet tropical tastes. It is sweet but delectably so. For those of you who crave rum funk, this isnt that. What this is is a rum definately outkicking the coverage, and worthy of your attention! A diamond in a sea of everything that calls itself rum. Delicious on the rocks too. Totally enhanced my cigar in my second tasting. This is a winner!
Complex. It has a butterscotch aroma that leads you to expect more sweetness than it actually delivers. To be clear, it is sweet—but nowhere near as sweet as a spiced rum. It has a thick mouthfeel. The flavor evolved as I drank it: the first sip had a bit of a tang that came across as a smoky pineapple, while subsequent sips leaned more heavily into the butterscotch notes from the aroma, without ever tasting artificial. This definitely among the best sipping rums for the price point.
From the first sip to the last drop in your glass, the taste of honey is prevalent. Unlike its nose, which smells like alcohol / ethanol more than anything. The syrupy taste is quite pleasant, a bit flowery, woody and spicy but nothing too extravagant but that feeling of drinking ethanol and the little stings in your nose clearly refrain this rum from deploy all its flavours and it is a bit of a shame. This Diplomático flagship could have been better while still highly enjoyable.
This is a whiskey drinker’s rum. Dark brown. Nose is a boozy vanilla dry brown sugar. Fruity complex caramel scent of your tounge. Fairly light and thin consistency. Dry and fruity when it hits the mouth, and actually tastes like a light highland scotch. Aftertaste is moderately long and more light fruity. No burn at all. My only complaint is that it would be much better with a little higher proof.
