Satsuma is made from sweet potato, which is one of the more popular bases for shochu out there. This is a solid entry level shochu, not overpowering in flavor, but more interesting than a vodka. The nose features lemon peel and roasted grains. The sweet potato comes thru on the first sip, followed by mint and a touch of sweetness. The finish has no burn and lasts a decent length, followed by white pepper. As an entry level shochu, this is one of the better one's out there. It's also pretty cheap, on par, if not cheaper, than some mid-level vodkas. It may not be for everyone, but those looking to venture past vodka, would probably be pretty happy with this shochu.
