Remarkable depth on the nose, with bright and crisp high rye notes imbued with a rock solid woody goodness. Excellent mouthfeel and exemplary flavor profile. Round, smooth, spicy, char forward and intensely flavor-packed. As the taste settles in, more rye notes become apparent, leaving no doubt as to what the mash bill contained. A long, long finish with prickly spice leaving a final warming adieu. For rye fans, look no further. This is the one for 2023.
About this bottle
Scarlet Shade is the first rye in Diageo's Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. portfolio of forgotten whiskeys. Master Blender Samantha Johnson blended the rye whiskey stocks which had travelled from Indiana where it was distilled to Kentucky where it was aged for 14 years. It was bottled in Tennessee at 90 proof. The tattoo-inspired label features a cardinal, the state bird of both Indiana and Kentucky, and a peony which is the state flower of Indiana as well as a skull to "honor lost loved ones." This limited edition rye whiskey is available beginning May 2023 nationwide. (SRP $199.99)

I really love this one. Smooth, deep, nice balance of sweet and spicy. I get some maple, rye, anise and mint. In some ways, not a lot stands out about this whiskey, but it's an easy, comfortable drink.
Rich, smooth, sweet, maple and brown sugar, would rate higher bit needs more proof, not as good as orphan barrel but still a great pour
smooth, Rush, true light spice, l butter cream, toasted banana bread, black berry
Did I just eat a pickle? Rye and oak as well but wow
