NEAT NOSE - Faint peach notes with more dominant notes of honey and vanilla PALATE - Smooth, delicate, almost thin mouthfeel with very apparent notes of honey and vanilla. It’s somewhat fruity on the palate, but peaches don’t necesarily come to mind. FINISH - Long finish of honey and vanilla slowly fadng away. BUY? - If you’re a huge fan of Michter’s low proof offerings then yes. This is better than their regular shelf sour mash offering and bourbon, but it won’t rock your world or redefine what whiskey should be. Low proof whiskey? Maybe. BUY AGAIN? - Honestly, probably not. $110 SRP is a bit much for this. I know it’s a limited release, but $80 would be much more reasonable. Don’t get me wrong, its good but not $100+ good.
Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey (2025 Release)
About this bottle
Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash is part of Michter's Legacy Series and named to honor John Shenk, the founder of the Pennsylvania distillery in 1753 which would eventually be called Michter's. This whiskey is made with (and named for) the sour mash process where a portion of the previously distilled whiskey mash (also called a setback or spent mash) is added to the next mash cook to ensure consistency of flavor among other benefits. For the 2025 release, some barrels used in the maturation process include oak sourced from the Vosges region of France which were toasted (not charred) to Michter's specifications. Available in limited quantities beginning July 2025. (SRP $110)

Review #295 Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Apple, apricot, plums, raisins. Palate: Clove, baking spice, more fruit. Finish: Long length with medium heat. Splash: A few drops of water bring out some oak tannins. Overall: 9/10 - My first bottle of Shenk’s, incidentally tasted in a Michter’s glass. Even at the lower proof, this bourbon has a finish that won’t quit, which goes a long way in my book. The nose and palate are also impressive. Michter’s keeps hitting it out of the park with their limited releases.
Very light and easy to drink. The taste seemed to get a little worse with more drinks. Started off pretty good, with a decent finish.
Pretty nice and tasty. A slow burn going down, not to hot on the finish
Tastes stronger than it actually is but good. Thanks Grant.
