Discontinued, Discounted, and Last bottle on the shelf at my local total wine. Had to try it for the name, and for the bold claim : “Spirit of Texas Single Malt”. The 2016 medal at SF World Spirits didn’t hurt either. Honestly it drinks really clean. I’ve had a number of single malts, both American and Scottish, and for the most part they have an iodide, heavily granular, almost dry butter flavor. Like I’m drinking Cheerios pressed into a liquid with the slightest bit of salt added. I understand that’s a very broad and terrible interpretation of single malt that probably will piss a lot of people off.... but I’m a corn boy. I drink high proof bourbon, with low rye content, and that’s it. So jumping out into this category, I was pretty sure what I was going to get... and was really happy to taste something completely different. It’s still got that heavy grain focus on both nose and front of tongue, but where I’m used to a bitter salty linger, I instead get sweet fluff. Almost like a corn flavored cotton candy is trying to emerge. Mouthfeel and finish are just the right temperature (not too hot, not too thin... 92 proof was a perfect bottling strength for this). Overall, it does represent a great spirit of Texas. It has more maturity and resilience on it than many of the 100% Texas corn bourbons I’m way too familiar with, but not old, dusty, and dry like a 12+ year single malt scotch. A great balance for people who want sweet, but not corn. Glad I picked this up and will savor it as the beautiful budget bottle that it was to me... especially since I can’t get any more.

One of my favorite American single malts. Sweet, light, but flavorful. Medium-short finish for most flavors except the grassy vanilla maple pineapple, which stays comfortably longer. A new staple in my collection.
Nose: wet wood, Grassy a bit. Somewhat sour, not overly sweet. Some kind of fruit, pear maybe... no, unripe banana... yes, banana Palate: apple, vanilla, banana Finish: medium, black pepper, cinnamon, more banana
Best whiskey-Non Bourbon I’ve had.
