About this bottle

This 6 year-old whiskey was released in June 2016. Templeton Rye is a brand that was introduced in 2006. Distilled in Indiana by MGP (formerly Lawrenceburg Distillers of Indiana), the rye is made from a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley. The whiskey is bottled in Iowa after the addition of a "proprietary formula" as well as local purified water. Templeton broke ground on a distillery in Iowa in 2017 with plans to distill their own whiskey.

N: Caramel cream, shaving soap, herbs, baking spice - especially cardamom and cumin. Maybe some hints of berries in the corners. P: Fruity - definitely some berries on the first sip. Caramel, fresh herbs, maybe a dash of dill, and some mint laying on top of some fresh orchard fruit. Finish is brings some oak bitterness, but more fruit and caramel sweetness. Plenty of herbs and also some mineral whispers. A serviceable rye. Nothing really stands out about it, good or bad. The fruitiness of it is nice, but never quite rises above the fray enough to distinguish this from other ryes in this price range, and there are also plenty of cheaper ryes that offer more (EC rye can be had for a few bucks less, Old Overholt BiB rye is a personal favorite at about $22), but this profile might work better for some. _______ Please come join an unofficial Distiller community on Discord: https://discord.gg/VSmCvzAQfH. The nose is spicy with a nice full woodiness. The palate is smooth and viscous with a bit of oiliness and some nice low-burn and prickly spice in the background. The flavor is a nice deep rye, unlike most. It's surprisingly sweet, but not overbearing. Brown sugar is quite present with nice cinnamon spice and a hint of clove. There's something kind of fruity like apple in the flavor, but it isn't tart green apple or sweet red apple. Definitely kind of an apple skin presence; maybe green apple skin? This is quite good with nicely balanced flavors and good execution and presence. Rye isn't really my thing though and I wish it had more complexity. There's a nice toasted almond flavor that lingers for quite some time on the finish. More fruit really does come out and become the basis of the sweetness. The vanilla from the wood has a nice presence that avoids overwhelming with floral flavor. It really isn't all that floral and it nicely doesn't have much mineral either. This is a really nice clean rye. A bit more mineral does eventually come out, unfortunately. It's still a nice clean rye though.

On the nose this offering is a lot of citrus, cream soda, vanilla, and mint. The palate is not reflective of the nose and drinks on the spicey side. The spices are not overpowering but do coat the back of the throat with some burnt caramel and toffee notes coating the roof of the mouth. The citrus and cream soda notes are no where to be found. The finish is of medium length and not at all unpleasant. It would not rank as a great rye but does make for an easy sipper and an excellent option for an Old Fashioned or other rye cocktail. Too many better ryes for far less money to consider repurchasing. Nose: 3.75/5 Taste: 3/5 Overall: 3.25/5 Repurchase: No Type: Mixer/Daily Sipper

I will start by saying that i am not a big fan of the standard four year Templeton and I definitely did not like their shady marketing practices making people believe that they distilled their own whiskey. With that being said my dad had a bottle of 6 year so i didn't have to buy a bottle or a pour at a bar. This 6 year is a step up from the four year and is better than what i was expecting. With that being said it is not your typical spicy rye whiskey and it's more juicy than dry. It is an easy drink to sip on at a reasonable price if you are somewhat new to ryes. Don't expect an over the top complex sipper, enjoy it in a cocktail or on the rocks.

A complex, Rye Whiskey by MGP Indiana Distillery; made using winter & spring rye grains, then double distilled before being aged in American white oak barrels made in Missouri. Templeton Rye Spirits Templeton 6 Year Old Rye Whiskey ... In 2010, Templeton set aside a couple of handpicked casks & bottled the Whiskey 6 years later at 91.5 proof. It has an aromatic birth with notes of butterscotch, flowers & rye spices; while a rich & fruity life adds notes of cinnamon, brown sugar, apple, rose, mint & a hint of toasty oak; that leads to a spicy death of medium length, with notes of caramel, cinnamon & burnt sugar. Tasty sipping whiskey. Probably the highest end I'd consider mixing. Great spice that different than a lot of others, though something send a tad missing in the body. Great initial sip with creaminess and sweetness followed by a really good and herbal spice backbone and finish. But again, the kids are a little flat.
