Not terrible, but gimmicky and overpriced--what we have here is another maker of unpeated whiskies bottling a young, peated spirit and selling it at an inflated price. Doesn't know what it wants to be: a mish-mash of flavours, most of them too weak, that don't really cohere. Lightly smoky (think campfire smoke, not earthy, green, vegetal Islay smoke), with flavours of light orchard fruit, light berries. Vanilla, butterscotch, diacetyl (movie popcorn butter), grapefruit and citrus pith. Stomach bile. Tastes young, sour, yeasty or doughy. Light tasting, with some faint tropical fruits, peppery, floral notes (heather), and a bit of saltiness. Reminds me of a lightly smoky blend or an off-brand Highland Park.
About this bottle
Cù Bòcan is named for the ghost of a Scottish hound who has been known to spook residents of the village of Tomatin for centuries. There are many stories about the beast, but one in particular sites an incident where he appeared before a distillery worker with steam flaring from his nostrils. Despite the frightening sight of the hellhound, the worker for some unbeknownst reason reached out to pet its black fur, only to see it dissolve before his eyes into a fine mist over the peaty moor. To match the fiery legend, this Scotch is lightly peated and is also aged in a combination of virgin oak, bourbon and sherry casks. It is also non chill filtered.

How do you rate a whisky when youth defines the complexity. It's an issue oddly on all my reviews tonight. Nose - YOUNG, spices, citrus, and yes earthy. Taste - So this is spices, citrus, vanilla. Then we got some oak, light earth, darker vanilla. A toasted barrel oak even. A really nicely made whisky, doesn't offer the value of the 12 or 18 tomatin but it's unique. Would I buy it again? no. Would I buy it again for 20 bucks? No. Am I glad to have tried it? I'm not upset. 1.25 score - I don't get it. It's and there's quality to this, but I'd never push anyone to waste money on this one.
Light peat and milk chocolate nose, embers smoke. Very delicate palate, peat and embers, very fruity with ripe tropical fruit. Medium-short finish with red fruit. Not bad, what you don't expect from a speyside whisky. Voto 3,75
This whisky is interesting but it makes me just want something smokier. I think if I were going to reach for this, then I would rather have an Islay. Nose: Burning leaves, brine, vanilla, lemon Palate: Vanilla, salt, lemon, slight smoke, pepper, savory, Finish: Medium, slight smoke and ash Mouthfeel: Slightly thin, but overall nothing detracting from the whisky.
Nose. Fresh and light, mostly grapefruit. You can just about pick up some smoke if you really look for it. Palate. Citrus (grapefruit) and spice. Again, if you look for it, there’s a touch of smoke. Finish. A lingering warmth. Even though it was only peated to 15ppm I was expecting a touch more peat and smoke from this, so found it a little disappointing.
It smells almost of bacon, fried in a pan with a sliced pear lingering nearby. The whiskey is sweet and smokey on the palate. It has a thicker full mouthfeel. The smoke really comes through in the finish, which gets peppery and sweet again. It lingers for a moderate amount of time.
