About this bottle

This is the fifth edition of Westland Garryana, an annual release for the Seattle-based distillery. This fifth edition is also part of the newly announced Outpost Range, whiskeys which highlight a central raw ingredient in single malt production with an emphasis on terroir. Garryana's focus is the wood used in its production--Quercus garryana, a native species of oak from the Pacific Northwest. This edition matures peated spirit in virgin Quercus garryana (36%) and the remainder in first-fill ex-bourbon Quercus Alba (American white oak). Available as of November 2020.

This single malt and unique wood species creates a different American whiskey. The aroma is a bit grassy/peaty with a slight stone fruit sweetness. The first sip is mellow on the front with a creeping sweetness. Following tastes brings a touch of woodsy sourness on the edges, slightly sweet pear sweetness, and a pleasant growing spicyness and burn to finish.

Color: Butterscotch Nose: Chopped almonds, a barn of hay, raked leaves from winter Palete: Coarsely ground coffee, cinnamon roll, brandied fruit cake Finish: Racetrack with burnt rubber, new shoes for the new year, sharpened pencil

Much sweeter smelling than the other expressions, honey mostly. Flavor is scotch like, the malted barley shines, the honey sweetness takes a backseat. Spicy barrel burn comes in on the tail, pretty rich which extends the finish.

This is a very interesting dram….woody and spicy in a very pleasant way with a very nice mouthfeel and maybe a light touch of peat. This reminds me quite alot of of the Amrut Fusion.

mzelak 4.3

Nose: sweet bbq, citrus, bright, tobacco smoke Taste: bbq and dark cocoa, earthy with leather on the finish

TheCodeFiend 4.0

Malt, brown sugar, cinnamon, brown butter, molasses, light peat. The best Garryana bottling so far.
