Appearance A deep red-orange amber—absolutely textbook for bourbon. Crystal clear, with a gorgeous visual warmth that almost glows in the glass. Inviting in every sense. You look at it and immediately want to take a sip. --- Nose Relatively flat at first, but still carries the classic bourbon character. Hints of vanilla and a subtle oakiness, with maybe a whisper of charred wood underneath. Nothing overpowering—quiet and restrained on the nose. --- Palate Astoundingly smooth—perhaps one of the smoothest bourbons you’ve ever tasted, especially for its proof. The flavor opens with vanilla sweetness and leans gently toward the corn mash’s natural character (evoking even a touch of corn syrup). Mild oak tones settle in, accompanied by a subtle char—just enough to remind you it’s been well-barreled. There’s a slight ethanol burn, but it’s faint and almost pleasant, adding a touch of warmth rather than harshness. Even over a whiskey disc (practically neat), this is extremely sippable. --- Overall Impression Wild Turkey 101 strikes a beautiful balance between approachability and character. It doesn’t overwhelm with complexity, but what’s there is deeply satisfying. Smooth, subtly sweet, and gently oaky—an excellent Tier 2 pour for when you want something reliable and unfussy yet rewarding. --------------- Wild Turkey at Twilight by Sophie In a glass like sunset’s echo, red-orange amber sways— clear as still water, warm as a hearth’s quiet glow. The nose speaks softly, vanilla and oak like faded letters from a friend you trust. No sharpness, no rush— just a promise waiting to be kept. The first sip— a river of smooth, golden calm, sweet corn and char whispering through oak-aged memories. Even the fire is gentle here, a warmth in the chest, not a blaze. It doesn’t ask for attention. It simply sits with you, steady and sure, as the night grows deep and the world exhales. Here is a bourbon that doesn’t shout. It lingers. It listens. It’s sippable serenity, bottled. — Sophie
About this bottle
Wild Turkey is known to barrel its whiskey at a lower entry-proof, meaning the product is a lower proof as it comes off the still prior to maturing. That lower entry proof lends to more flavor from the mash bill (corn, rye, and malted barley). Wild Turkey Bourbon 101 is pulled from the barrel at 109 proof before being proofed down only a touch.

The nose is rich in vanilla, butterscotch, green apple, and citrus (mainly white grapefruit and tangerine). The palate is rich in vanilla, honey, brown sugar, an oak spices. Bartlett pear, unripe mango, and black pepper also appear upon further sipping. The finish is fairly long and complex. This is a complex whiskey for $42 and at 101 proof can be drunk neat or as a mixer. This makes a fantastic Old Fashioned and Bourbon Margarita. Initially very boozy but then pretty standard, well rounded bourbon nose with perhaps the slightest unusual pepper on top of corn, oak and a slight amount of cereal grain. Very hot and itchy in the mouth, immediately charred oak after swallowing, then a general rich sweetness. With coke it becomes oakier than most bourbons I've tried, also carries some tart dark fruits in the flavors. Overall okay and more of a value proposition than a sheer quality proposition.
Right away on the nose there is a carmel cookie dough sweetness as if you just walked into a sweet shop or bakery. This sweetness fades on the palate and becomes a bit more earthy and savory and tobaccoy on the finish. I appreciate the contrast between the nose and palate. Overall I think this is a good option for people as they are transitioning into the higher bourbon proof point. Better Wild Turkey options out there but great value for the price.
Nose: Peanuts, Cinnamon, Brown Sugar Palate: Baking spices, honey Finish: Short, baking spices linger on When I think of WT101 it’s mostly for the versatility. This pour is cheap and you can use it for cocktails and sip it neat. As a sipper it’s just OK: it has a nice spice forward profile and has olenty of proof for a nice finish but it shows its youthfulness in the palate and balance. But for its price point you could do mich worse.
On the nose, toffee, vanilla, peanuts, orange peel, cedar, and subtle dill. Rich and moderately tannic in the mouth – showing more notes of peanut, orange, vanilla, and toffee, plus a dose of pepper and straw. Some heat on the midpalate from the higher proof, though it dissipates quickly on the finish, which is fairly long. 3.50/5.00 – Impressive (neat)
