I'm not much of a fan of cream liqueurs in general, but I will say this is definitely better than Bailey's. The fact that it also doesn't really cost much more than Bailey's is another plus and I believe this offers a unique twist to any cocktail that one would typically use Bailey's. I will say though, I wish the marula fruit was utilized more and in a blind taste test you may not even know this has that fruit in there, just that it has a bit of citrus that isn't as common in cream liqueurs. The nose is heavy on the coffee notes, with some nutmeg thrown in there. The first sip hits you with chocolate and orange peel. It's not as rich as I would have expected, pretty silky actually. The finish has no burn, which is pretty much standard for most cream liqueurs, although there is some nice spice, citrus and sweetness. I don't expect this to blow people away and while it hails from South Africa and utilizes a native fruit to the region, it really can stand in for any cream liqueur. It's a nice late night dessert drink as well. I'm not sure I will go out of my way to stock this, but in the world of cream liqueurs this is up there, but still not as good as Five Farms in my opinion.
About this bottle
Amarula Cream Liqueur is made with the fruit of African Marula trees which are a favorite treat for elephants. The fruit is de-stoned, crushed, and fermented to make a wine. This wine is then distilled and the Marula brandy is aged for two years in French oak. The brandy is blended with cream and sugar.

Appearance: Opaque beige, like milky coffee. Aroma: Fruity, malty, caramel nougat. There is an almost bizarre *tiny* waft that is reminiscent of scotch whisky. Flavour and Texture: Creamy and dairy sweet, a little alcohol is detectable but it's very light. Caramel and soft fruity flavours, but it's not bright fresh fruit - more like faint stewed figs or dates. There is a slight hazelnut or macadamia note in the aftertaste and a butterscotch character. Guilty confession time - I utterly adore this liqueur. I could drink far more of it than was healthy in a single sitting, I find it so compelling. The closest thing to which I can compare it is Bailey's Irish Cream but it is way better. I've served it to people who are not normally fond of creamy liqueurs and they have become instant converts. Part of my love for this is undoubtedly nostalgia, as I have vivid memories of the first time I tasted it and the company I was with, but that doesn't diminish its quality. Wonderful neat, on the rocks, as a milkshake, in strong black coffee, over ice-cream, and so on. Try freezing it to make Amarula gelato (yummy). "Good" : 84/100 (3.75 stars)
Creamy milk like color that pours nicely like a stream of honey. Makes you mouth water. Smells like butter cream cake. With hong of vanilla. Task is well rounded and satisfying. Not tangy, weet and good feeling down the throat. Will be appreciated by all, even those who are not fan of liquere. My favorite liquere so far, neat or few drops in a coffee .
Wow haven’t had this since my early 20’s. Brings back memories of drinking this with our South African friend Jean (pronounced John)after our high school years. Such a smooth creamy flavor that tastes like nothing else I can describe. So so good!
A complex cream cordial from South Africa that has an aromatic birth with notes of marula fruit & fresh cream; while a full body adds notes of walnut, honey & caramel; that led to a long & creamy death. October 2016
Great on the rocks, very smooth, very sweet. my original go to before Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream
