The comparison with the 17 yo, which is the reference, is inevitable. Faint on the nose: there is a lot of alcohol, but also caramel. Licorice predominates. Always caramel on the palate, more oily than the 17 yo, but I would also say more "ordinary", less complex. I always feel a predominance of licorice. Sherry and burnt smoke, which I hadn't warned in 17 yo. More sweet. Sweet but bitter finish at the same time. Compared to 17, a completely different whisky, less fresh (in my opinion this is one of the winning characteristics of 17, which makes it a good whisky for any occasion) but decidedly more full-bodied. If I must say, however, even less good…. In any case, a good quality product. Voto 3,80
About this bottle
George Ballantine's empire began in 1827 as a humble grocery store that also supplied a variety of whiskies to its customers in Edinburgh, Scotland. With the help of his sons, he eventually expanded the business and began creating his own blends of whisky to bottle and sell under the family name. Ballantine's 21 Year is blended with a higher proportion of whiskies aged in European oak barrels compared to the rest of the range. This very old blended Scotch is bottled at 43% ABV.

Continuing my old Ballantine's experience i now give you my review of the 21yo one, i know i started with the 30yo, but that one got a perfect score so that is why i started there, because of my emotion of having enjoyed a nice dram. This one was also great, but its not near the 30yo. Still the notes on this one were so clean and easy, truly delicious. Bottled at 40%abv On the nose, Candy, Impalpable sugar, Red apples, Sider; that outstanding Orange note, fresh orange juice, fresh orange peel. That Vanilla note from all ballantine's was also present. On the palate a little straightforward but in a fancy and delightful way, milk chocolate and prunes. Aftertaste was long and ashy, with hints of wood smoke. Nice. Overall this dram is excelent and deserves a score of 90 over 100.

Very smooth and creamy, with a pronounced oak note at the end, along with pleasant spice. 1/27/17 The oak note mellowed out just a bit, and the spice kicked up just a notch. 11/6/17
Great nose well rounded sugar cookie, brown sugar and hay. Palate is very sweet, very rounded off flavors with a hint of smoke. Not aggressive or spiky. Short finish.
