White, lightly aged, blanco or silver rums, whatever you want to call them are not typically rums that I drink neat, but I do have a good number of them, so I figured I would run thru 8 of them and see which one emerges the winner (between Angostura, Privateer, Havana Club, Cana Brava, Barbancourt, Flor de Cana, Banks 5 Island & El Dorado). It was very hard to determine if this was better than Banks or not, but in the end I went with this one since it felt more balanced. I did miss the grassy notes of the Banks though, so it was close. Either way, I would lean towards cocktails only for this one. The nose features dried fruit and citrus notes. The palate has a mineral taste to it, with a bit of sweetness and vanilla, which is then followed by tropical fruit notes. The finish is a little bit longer than the first 3 on the list, with little burn. It is a slight step up, although very close to Banks. I wouldn't say no to this neat, but I would probably stick to cocktails for this white rum.
About this bottle
Caña Brava is made from sugarcane grown adjacent to the Las Cabras distillery where it's produced in Herrera, Panama. It's made under the expertise of Master Distiller Francisco "Don Pancho" J. Fernandez, who honed his craft in Cuba before moving to Panama in the 1990s. The distillate is put through 5 continuous stills - four copper-plated and one copper and brass. It's aged at 75% ABV for 18-24 months in new American oak, then cut to 49% ABV and transferred to a combination of used Tennessee and bourbon barrels for 12-24 months. It is then filtered for clarity in the carta blanca style popularized by Bacardí.

This IS actually a pretty decent sipper. Very tequila-like with the vegetal notes. Dry with just a hint of sweetness. Nice viscous mouthfeel. The best light rum I've had in a while. At $21 this is an excellent buy.
Had in Romancing the imperial Enemy; Cana brava carta blanco, black seal rum, lime & ginger beer. Ginger nose. Ginger flavor with a touch of dark rum. @ Alamo Draft House Highlands
Prety good, not to nuch aroma or flavour but very good white rum
