About this bottle

The brand now known as Canadian Club actually got its start in Detroit. Hiram Walker, founder of the brand, decided to make a move to Canada due to the onset of Prohibition in the area. The grains in the whisky, rye, rye malt, barley malt, and corn, are aged separately before blending and bottling.

Canadian Club 1858 Blended Canadian Whisky Served: On the rocks Price Tier: Tier 3 / Daily Driver Appearance: A rich, molasses-toned amber in the glass—beautifully warm and classic. Solid in color, with a strong visual presence. Nose: Not especially complex, but inviting. Notes of vanilla and oak surface quickly. There's a sweet aroma, possibly brown sugar, maple, or molasses, though not distinctly any one of them. Palate: Crisp on the tongue and very refreshing—this is not a harsh pour. The first sip brings vanilla and a mysterious sugary note that defies simple classification. The oak carries through, grounding the experience. Slight bitterness appears in the aftertaste, but then softens into a lingering sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar or light molasses. Finish: Smooth, mellow, and very sippable. No harsh isopropyl bite. Over ice, it achieves balance and presence without overreaching. Not recommended neat—it likely would become too sharp without the tempering of cold dilution. Overall Impression: Canadian Club 1858 may not be a complex whiskey, but it's a crafted one—evidence of a maestro blender’s refined palate. In a world that often idolizes single malts, this bottle quietly demonstrates the strength of blendmanship: the art of reducing flaws and enhancing character through thoughtful assembly. Like a French table wine born from layered varietals, this whisky doesn’t shout—it harmonizes. A reliable, worthy companion for weeknight sipping. --- Companion Poem: “The Harmony of Grains” By Sophie A quiet pour, not proud or grand, No pedigree from highborn land, But something forged by careful hand— A blend of earth and time. Vanilla leans against the oak, A breath of sugar, soft and broke, Like dusk that’s sweetened by the smoke Of wood still faintly warm. This is no solo voice that sings— But many hearts, and many things. And what one grain alone can’t bring, Together, they become. So sip, and see what patience made— A whisper, not a cavalcade— But still, it lingers unafraid To earn its place in song.

After almost two weeks of absence, i can rate another whisky. This is my second Canadian Whisky, and now that i have tasted two, i can tell there is a profile that identifies canadian drams: maple syrup. bottled at 40%abv, this "Premium extra" whisky is rather good, specially on the nose. Tawny color, very appealing. On the nose: Very sweet, with maple syrup, honey, vanilla, prunes and creme brulee notes. On the palate is sweet but also grassy, with pleasant oaky notes, oranges, with a sensation of toffee and tobacco at the same time, with a medium spicy finish. It is light bodied and after adding water the nose turns fully honeyed and the palate turns into lemon bitter notes and tobacco finish. Good average dram, very sweet.

Canadian Club 1858 is nothing special. It's a pretty standard whiskey and more meant for cocktails or highballs as opposed to drinking neat, but at least its cheap. The nose is uneventful with some light barley notes. On the palate its watery with a touch of sweetness. I do get some wheat and a bit of spice. The finish is short and a bit hot. I think for the value, its decent enough. It wont blow you away but in a highball it serves its purpose. I would say neat it's more like a 1.5/2, but I will bump it up thanks to the value component.

Gator Epp 2.5

Distinct notes of vanilla, oak, and baking spice on the nose, with a milder hint of toasted coconut. Light, fairly round mouthfeel. More oak, vanilla, and toasted coconut on the palate, plus lots of pepper which persists throughout the finish. Finish is on the shorter end, but is also noticeably smooth. Nothing unique to be found here, but quintessentially easy-drinking. 2.50/5.00 – Acceptable (neat)
