CHICKEN COCK *NOSE: Not overpowering, but I wouldn’t classify it as light. Fairly Complex with Leather, Oak Spice, Clover, and Orange Peel. With time it gets sweeter with Dubble Bubble, Vanilla, and Honey. Underneath all this is a base layer of Seasoned Firewood and Light Barnyard Funk. *NEAT: NAS, but tastes like it contains at least some decently aged stock. The Oak really asserts itself on the first sip with Drying Tannins. After the palate becomes accustomed, I get Dubble Bubble, Waxy Leather, Honeycomb, Orange Oil, Char, and Black Pepper. On the Finish, the back of the tongue gets some Bitter Spice and Musty Orange. Decent KYHug with Mint, Oak, and Honeycomb layering and coating. This is very good. *SPLASH: Orange takes over the nose. On the palate, some of those Tannins become more of a Polished Oak. Finish gets a little more Tingly Spice. *VERDICT: I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but I really liked it. It gives me that Leathery Waxy vibe I get from Buffalo Trace/EH Taylor/Blanton’s etc. A little research reveals this is a 70/21/9 mashbill contract custom distilled for them from Bardstown Bourbon Co., which would be (to my knowledge) my first sample of their wares. If so, BRAVO. It tastes older than its rumored 4-5 years and much like my experience with Rabbit Hole, I’m willing to accept more of a premium price for something unique. As a side note, they’ve managed to produce a bottle that looks great, features a quality tight sealing cork (something that’s getting rarer by the day in Bourbon Land), and despite appearances, is not heavy/cumbersome and hard to pour. A nice surprise and a definite repeat buy.
About this bottle
Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Bourbon is distilled, aged and bottled in Kentucky. The Chicken Cock brand was first established in 1856 in Paris, Kentucky. It was the house whiskey at The Cotton Club, a famous speakeasy in Harlem during Prohibition. It was smuggled in tin cans and opened tableside. A distillery fire just after WWII closed the distillery, but in 2012 the brand was resurrected by Grain & Barrel Spirits.

Dark honey to light copper in color. Plenty of corn on the nose... A light note of cornflake, good presence of vanilla, a bit of funky barn mustiness. Orande peel, dry toast and caramel, too. Sweet up front, and relatively soft, a bit of spice takes the edge off the sweetness before transitioning into a dryer oaky finish. Finish is medium length and there are some nice lingering sweet notes: milk chocolate covered cherries, burnt sugar and a subtle hint of green apple that emerge to balance the bit of spice and dry oak. Although not terribly exciting, its very good, and thats a win
Day No.4 The nose on this was familiar, in regards to plenty other spirits in this category. I got the vanilla and dusted cinnamon which is always welcomed. But a hint of dried fruit as well. When proceeding to taste it, I received a friendly note of cherry and soft oak. Sadly its presence was brief to allow the grain to emerge with a peppery finish. Subtle oak and leather came and went at times. The cherry did revisit at times, but always seemed to be passing through. This was a fun one. Let's see what day 5 brings.
A rock solid bourbon with every piston firing. Lovely sweet corn forward nose, with light oak. The flavor is well balanced with the 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley mashbill. Just enough rye spice to keep things interesting. The aging is young, yet has imparted enough wood to infuse the spirit with a vivacious oakiness. We really enjoy this and would defintiely recommend as one of your “go-to” bottles for cocktails and shots. Speaking of the bottle, we appreciate the honeycomb effect of the glass.
An elegant, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey by Grain & Spirits Distillery; being 100% distilled, aged & bottled unfiltered at 45% ABV, in Paris, Kentucky. It has a delicate birth with hints of hint of wood, dried cherries, vanilla & caramel; while a full & creamy life adds notes of caramel-corn, butterscotch, toasted oak, Mueslix & a hint of pepper; that led to a dry & spicy death of medium length. The nose is really sweet. Fruity actually with notes of pineapple, bubblegum, and creamy vanilla. It does smell like Bourbon, but with no normal Bourbon notes somehow. The palate keeps all these notes, but adds some corn dust. It tastes thin, but it's not somehow. Actually a pretty good mouth feel despite no finish. It's fun, probably a crowd pleaser, but won't change your life.
