About this bottle

VIDA Puebla is a new addition to the Del Maguey portfolio. While the classic VIDA bottling is made in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, this mezcal is made at a new palenque located in Axocopan, Puebla. VIDA Puebla was made in collaboration with co-founder Steve Olson who wanted to bring to market a sustainably produced, easy drinking mezcal with a competitive price point. The mezcal is bottled at 80 proof and is available in select US markets including CA, FL, IL, NY, OH, & TX beginning March 2023. A nationwide release is expected to begin July 2023. (SRP $37.99)

I had a good experience with the Clasico for my first mezcal review, so I figured I’d draw from the same well for my second exploration of the genre. Nose: Heavy on the vanilla. Cucumber and agave. Lime and grapefruit. Floral notes. Smoky and medicinal. I detect the sun-dried tomato that is so pronounced on the palate after tasting it. Palate: More of the same. Vanilla. Cucumber and agave. Massive notes like and grapefruit citrus. A note akin to taking a bite out of a sun-dried bagel. Ash and sulfur. Finish: All grapefruit. Sun-dried tomato. Rubber and smoke. Cinnamon heat. Agave. Lots of spice. Moderate-short length. This is another good one. Pleasant and easy-going despite the smoke and spice. At 40%, it manages to stay interesting—although, this begs the question. How could this perform at a higher ABV? I imagine the result could be quite enjoyable. Comparing this to the Clasico I prefer the latter. It’s a more powerful and complex expression. But this one certainly has its place. It’s subtle and easy-going. This won’t be my go-to in the future but it certainly has its place. Worth the cost at $35. 3.5/5.

For aroma I get clay pot, smoky, sweet, earthy. My first sip I initially got sweet tropical fruit. Then I got a bit smokiness some green pepper and earthiness. The taste is lighter than the aroma. I’m drinking it neat and I feel the subtle flavors would get lost in a cocktail.

It has a clear, silver appearance, with some minute suspended particles. The aroma is of peppery agave, with a hint of mild smoke. The flavor is similar, with a touch more smokiness. It has a light body and a dry finish. RJT

New to this but I'll give it a try. Has a clay, earth and smoke aroma. The flavor is similar to the smell but surprisingly light and smooth. The finish gave me a blast of smoke and earth. Really enjoyed it.

Nose of smoke, char, earth, petrichor, silicon. Slightly sweet, smoky, petrichor, charred palate. Medium agave, smoke finish.
