You need to let it breathe a long before that turpentine odour settles and you can smell roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, and molasses. The taste is sweet, gentle, dark chocolate, (wall/hazel-)nuts, and cocoa, with a subtle bit acidic finish. As with every spirit made by the solera method, it's decent but missing character. Like, honestly, I would enjoy this more in some rum-based drink or with cola, where the flavours can cooperate, than sipping it straight.
About this bottle
This rum is distilled from what is referred to as “virgin sugar cane honey” or cane syrup instead of molasses like most sugar-based spirits. It is distilled in a combination of alembic and column stills and is aged in ex-American whiskey barrels for up to 12 years.

Nose is a delicious blend of brown sugar, buttered toffee, and strong vanilla that truly invites you in. First sip presents notes of oak and vanilla, along with a subtle hint of coffee, all with a buttery mouthfeel. It is definitely sweet like most Rum, but not overtly sweet. The finish is baking spice and a hint of heat with the slight linger of vanilla. This rum is nice enough to be sipped neat, but also has enough flavor to work well in drinks.
This is a dishonest rum. Nobody should be buying this stuff. It’s shady marketing, even by rum’s loose standards. There is no Dictador distillery in Colombia. A bottling plant, maybe but not a distillery. Their rum is sourced from Panama and heavily dosed.
This was a strange surprise to me. It has the same caramel and coffee notes you'll find in the Dictador 20 year and the superb Dictador XO but it is no where near as good. The balance in this rum is completely off to my taste. I'll have the 20 year
Quick taste Très doux, assez léger, poivré, sucré presque bonbon, légers fruits rouges, un brin salé Très bon, rappelle un petit peu le Sexton et dans une moindre mesure le penderyn Madeira
I tried dictador 12 after tasting the 20 year old release, so it seemed to me watery and with subtle notes of coffee, smoke and leather. Quite good but very lacking in flavor.
