About this bottle

This century old rum producer is based in the heart of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia and produces rum using the classic Spanish solera method where the oldest rum is 20 years of age. Pursuant of a rustic and more medium-bodied style, the Dictador Solera System Rum 20 is made from cane syrup and distilled in a combination of pot and column stills.

A rich, dark rum by Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia aged for 20 years in oak barrels using the Solera method. It has a rich birth with notes of soft caramel, smoky-roasted honey, round oak sensation, baking spice & roasted coffee; while an even richer life adds notes of oak, caramel, dry fruits, maple, roasted honey, truffles & dark brown sugar; that leads to a long & smooth death with loads of dark brown sugar. I rather like this rum. I do have a soft spot for sweeter rums, and this one seems to favour vanilla with some hints of toffee and caramel. I also caught a bit of oakiness but it didn't overwhelm the sweetness. One of my previous tasting notes compared the taste to a butter pecan tart, but I didn't seem to get that this time.

Obviously this is the closest to the great Dictador XO. Still very deep in flavor but you get a bit more heat. A huge step up from the 12 year old which is not that great in my humble opinion. So, lots of deep coffee, toffee notes. Good Stuff and if you can afford it get the a bottle of the Dictador XO.

This is a dishonest rum. Nobody should be buying this stuff. It’s shady marketing, even by rum’s loose standards. There is no Dictador distillery in Colombia. A bottling plant, maybe but not a distillery. Their rum is sourced from Panama and heavily dosed.

This was a very surprising drink. On the nose this was cacao, chocolate and coffee. On the palate it was more sweet chocolate mixed with coffee like a nice mocha. The finished was sweet and medium. This is one that I will get again.

Smell is roasted sugar. Taste is more roasted sugar, maple, some oak, honey, caramel. Lingering sweetness that lasts forever. Not a big fan of this one as I don't like sweet, but I understand it and recognize it as a good rum.
