About this bottle

Flor de Caña was founded in 1890 near the base of San Cristóbal Volcano, the highest and one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. The brand's rums are produced from molasses from estate-grown sugarcane. American white oak barrels formerly used to age bourbon are used to age the rum. The 18 listed on the bottle isn't an age statement, but rather indicates an average of the rums used.

Strong, sweet, and spicy is the scent from this rum. A bit acetone at first, but beneath the surface are layers of allspice, bayleaf, smoked demerara sugar, and cherry cavendish. Primarily sweet on the tongue with a subtle burn and a tinge of bitterness. Butter pancake syrup, cinnamon, clove, charred sugarcane, and lime. Medium to full bodied, with a pillowy mouthfeel calling to mind the clouds surrounding the San Cristobal volcano. Legs are sparse and fleeting yet attractive, with well developed teardrops. The finish is short and mild. Gentle tannins balance lingering sweetness pleasantly, revealing notes of pecans, milk chocolate, raisins, and dried coconut. Aroma: 8 Taste: 9 Body: 8 Finish: 8

Dark amber pour. Nose is very faint with subtle alcohol and burnt sugar notes. The palate is more complex but light with wood, burnt sugar and tobacco. Thick mouthfeel with a medium finish. I honestly expected a little more from this as far as the flavor. It's not bad, just not very robust. It is extremely smooth and somewhat complex, just muted like an American rum. Maybe I'll change my mind if I pair it with a cigar. Longer time in the barrel almost always means better flavor for whiskey. This is the second rum line I've tried where I preferred the younger expression. I can drink Flor 7 all day; the other brand was Real McCoy 5 over the 12 year. I'll update after a cigar session.

A complex, 'Dark Rum by Flor de Caña Distillery at the base of San Cristobal in Nicaragua (Nicaragua’s most active volcano) enriched with volcanic water & aged for a minimum of 18 years in small American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It has a rich & aromatic birth with notes of oak spice, zesty orange peel, dark brown sugars, dark caramel toffee, nutmeg, hints of cinnamon, vanilla & anise; a dry & full life adding notes of spice, cocoa, dark caramel & more oak; that leads to a long & tropical death with notes of toasted banana, walnut, dark chocolate., oak, leather & smoke. Wish it was better considering the 18 year claim. Subtle flavor of honey, nuts, and vanilla when sipped but it has quite the boozy nose. Somehow smooth considering that though. It’s definitely not bursting with flavor and it’s a very light tasting rum overall. It definitely doesn't compare with your favorite Bajan rums for the record. I picked some up because it was cheaper at the duty free in Costa Rica than it was at home. Good to convert a vodka drinker to rum perhaps but likely to bore the whiskey crowd.

Tried neat at imperial bar at the airport in Costa Rica. On the nares I get sweet sugar cane, caramel, tobacco, candied cherries, butterscotch & flowers. On the palate it’s super smooth like spreading peanut butter on a piece of bread with notes of cocoa& vanilla flavored cigar. Slight hints of an after taste of a heath bar. Delicious! PURA VIDA 🤙🇨🇷

Nose of cherry, a hint of oak, some baking spices. Palate hits incredibly smooth with notes of molasses, well balanced oak, and tobacco. While perhaps not unique, it is everything you would want from a nice sipping rum. The finish is remarkably long with the tobacco standing out the longest. Lovely sipper
