Neat dram. Sweet agave candy with a hint of camp smoke on the nose. Very slight acetone as well, but not enough to be off putting. Super smooth agave, fruit and floral with char. Super yummy dram, well worth a look. Shared with @Elw00t, well appreciated.
About this bottle
This mezcal is distilled from 100% agave tobalá which grow semi-wild. The agave are harvested after 12 years and pit-roasted in the traditional manner. The roasted "piñas" or hearts of the agave plants are crushed using a mule-drawn tahona before the juices are open fermented. This mezcal is double-distilled and produced in Matatlan, Oaxaca by Mezcalero Gregorio Martinez Jarquin. This is released in small batches due to sustainable practices conserving the wild agave plants as well as the scarcity and size of the tobalá plants. It only grows in high altitudes in the shade of oak trees and is relatively small in size.

Drinking a 2013 and 2014 side by side. Similar fruit flavors, but overall quite different. The 2014 has a ashy flavor maybe? While the 2013 seems a little cleaner and brighter.
Sweet on the nares with peaty notes and nutty. Spicy and leather on the palate with hints of clay most likely secondary to be served in clay taster
Nose of clay, lemon, agave, honeycomb, and bubblegum. Taste of roasted agave, pineapple, and candied fruits.
An intense balance between floral, tropical fruit and light smoky flavors. Absolutely beautiful. 96
Not my favorite. Herbal and piney. Almost rough. Not sure if I got the right pour????
