About this bottle

Isle Of Harris Gin is the inaugural spirit released by Isle of Harris Distillers which opened in 2015. The gin is made with nine botanicals which are steeped in neutral grain spirits, the most notable being sugar kelp which is hand-harvested by a local diver. Other botanicals include juniper, coriander, angelica root, bitter orange peel, orris root, cubeb, cassia bark, and licorice. After the maceration is complete, the sugar kelp is removed and distillation takes place in a copper still named "The Dottach."

Nose: Crisp and clean with highlights of juniper and pine needles. There’s a light floral aroma reminiscent of orange blossom and rose water, and a subtle spicy note of musky nutmeg and coriander. It’s a fairly simple nose, but it is well composed. Palate: Peppery sweet juniper on arrival. Citrus flavours follow quickly, along with herbal and spice notes. Like the nose the palate is relatively simple but agreeable. There is an elusive and slightly odd note that I presume is the sugar kelp botanical they feature. It lends a dry maritime touch that is a good counterpoint to the dominant piney juniper, but it turns a little flinty and sour towards the finish. Finish: Medium. The finish fades into a clean but bittersweet vegetal aftertaste. A pleasant gin that works well sipped neat or mixed, however it’s not as outstanding as the press reviews would have you believe, and it is quite expensive. There are many excellent gins that equal or exceed this at similar, or considerably lower, price points. “Good” : 83/100 (3.5 stars)

On The Nose A well-defined juniper note with pine needles, immediately followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Develops a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry all underpinned by mixed spice. Sugar kelp adds to the complexity and richness and gives a dry maritime note. On The Palate Refreshing gin with good balance between the bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavours of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavour has developed of crushed coriander. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste. On The Finish Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea.

Disappointed with this gin. I'm kind of perplexed by it. Straight it has a noticeable but subtle sugar kelp flavour which i thought was an interesting twist but this gin gets lost with premium non sugary tonic. Its better with full sugar tonic but again flavour is lost. Found it best with soda water and blood orange but the overall flavours found straight are completely lost with any mixer. The bottle is beautiful and drinking straight it's fine but for the money there's better and cheaper gins out there which i can have as a martini, g and t, collins or straight and enjoy the different flavours of the gin in all formats.

Extraordinary well balanced. Juniper and pine with citrus, spice, hint of green herbs on the nose echoed on the palate. Finish is medium to long with nice warming, pepper and a subtle saltiness. By far my favourite gin. Sooo smooth, I think it is best served neat. Maybe with a wedge of grapefruit but not even necessary. Luv, luv, luv this gin.

Although this is a juniper forward gin the hint of brine makes it stand out as something different to enjoy. Absolutely stunning with a tonic with lots of quinine and a garnish of fresh lime - makes for a very refreshing summer afternoon sipper.

I am not a huge fan of gin but thie stuff is great! Doesn’t have that bite on the back end most gins do but is very smooth and has a citrusy finish. Highly recommend!
