About this bottle

This is the first in a series of limited edition releases from Jack Daniel's celebrating a part of its history. In this instance it is a throwback to the early 1900s sour mash style that was available when the liquid was packaged in a bottle with a light green label. It is bottled in limited quantities at 43% ABV as of the summer of 2018.

A friend gave me a pour of this what feels like it must have been almost a decade ago. I thought about buying a bottle but never got around to it before it seemingly went out of circulation. Yet, I managed to find this a few months ago and figured it was meant to be. Had it not been for the low price of entry, I may not have taken a crack at this, but hey, why not? Nose: Heavy corn and sawdust. Caramel, vanilla, and molasses. Brown sugar. Gala apple. Banana and walnut. Black pepper, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Palate: Caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla. Gala apple and toffee. Raisin. Some pipe smoke. Heavy almond and some pecan. Orange peel. Banana and walnut. Some milk chocolate. Black pepper, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Finish: Caramel and vanilla. Almond and walnut. Pipe smoke. Black pepper, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Moderate-to-long finish. Nice finish. Not a bad buy. Pleasantly surprising, in fact. Nothing special—after all—this is merely the standard Old No. 7 bottled at a slightly higher 43% ABV. Sometimes that extra kick is all you need though. The Old No. 7 is a bit watery, and interestingly, the lower ABV makes the experience harsher. This is a superior offering. At $30, this was well worth the price of entry. 3.5/5.

This vintage looking bottle is how the original Jack Daniel's label used to look (in a ceramic bottle) at least till 1904 when it won the gold medal for best whiskey in the world, then switching to the iconic black and white label. Legacy edition No. 1 is part of a collector's series which i believe nowadays there are three of them. Bottled at 43%abv, caramel color. On the nose, a very nice, fruity aroma. Banana, pepper, red fruits, cherries, glazed pork, burnt caramel. It has the traditional sourness on the nose; milk powder (milk formula), dehydrated bananas, banana milkshake, chocolate milk powder, sawdust. Very fancy and appealing aroma. After a first sip, it revealed prunes, caramel and oak spice. On the palate, it was fairly good. A Sour banana flavor if that exists; prunes, feels fancy; slight hint of vanilla. Second sip was a little wattery; caramel and sweet vanilla. Very easy drinkable. Aftertaste was pleasant. Creamy but also dry. Raw rice, a very enjoyable mild pepper note. Long, rewarding finish, oak spice and pepper. Overall, this one felt like a better version of the classic old no. 7; the extra 3%abv sure gives more flavor to it and a more rounded experience. Nice whisky, 87 over 100.

The good thing is that there is no alcohol in the nose, but the bad thing that there is nothing common with classic version of jack Daniels (not such caramel and vanilla as number 7). We have got average bourbon.

Surprisingly mellow and a friendly fellow. This good old boy will shake your hand to start and leave you feeling fine and just a little giddy before you know it, like a good friend.

Classic Jack proofed up just a little bit. At a couple dollars more than the classic, it makes a great gift and stands out in the collection with its retro label.

A very hot, not pleasant whiskey. Alcohol smells very bad, unfortunately very bad for such a brand. One of the worst I've ever had.
