By Day Four of a 6-day cruise, I was getting "scotched out". The cruise ship bars stocked a number of scotch whiskies and I was trying them all. In need of a change up, I asked for a rye with two ice cubes. This is what they poured for me. And a fine rye whiskey it was! It had a slight sweetness followed by wonderful barrel notes of vanilla, caramel and oak. I was very happy to leave the scotch behind and finish the cruise with my new found rye. Now if I can only find it here in Maryland.
About this bottle
Mike Sherlock and his wife, Patti built Fremont Mischief Distillery facing part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington. Designed with wood panels and dark metal crows, its steampunk-y vibe is reflective of Mike's past life as a ship yard owner and commercial fisherman. John Jacob Rye Whiskey is named after Patti's grandfather as it's based on his recipe of 90% PacificNorthwest rye blended with 10% malted barley. The mash is distilled in pot stills, then oak aged. The color is light to medium amber.

Perfume on the nose, super interesting. Flavor has the same botanicals, rye spice but reminiscent of gin even. Pretty light, little body, not much bite. Interesting twist on a rye though.
A little sweet with some light barrel notes. Also getting a tiny hint of something akin to mint.
Light crisp apple
