About this bottle

Maison Ferrand is known for their Cognac, but to rum aficionados, they are better known for their Plantation rum line. The Plantation line includes rums from around the world finished in a variety of special casks, and the Kaniche is cast in the same mold. The XO is a Barbados rum aged in ex-bourbon barrels that is subsequently finished for an additional 18 months in Cognac casks in France.

Butterscotch-toffee with an intense amount of coconut on the nose. If you manage to get underneath that there is vanilla and simple syrup with the barest hint of bright fruit. There is noticeable alcohol, which dissipates noticeably after sitting a couple of minutes. This has a thick palate loaded with coconut. The astringency shows back up quickly while the toffee and butterscotch turns a bit more into very sweet coffee. The entire palate turns sugary as some barrel notes show up, introducing a slightly bitter charred oak underneath the sweetness. The coconut returns and stays awhile after drinking. The whole thing is too sweet for me after the first couple of sips.

Nice rum. Not quite the Perfección but pretty good. It has a a pleasant nose with tropical fruit notes of coconut and papaya under a blanket of caramel, cocoa, and wood. Delicious flavor though a bit sweet, definitely some sugar has been added back into the distillate. Slightly hot, but not harsh. Flavors are reminiscent of bourbon, vanilla and spice, but with a tropical twist. The texture is OK and it holds up pretty well to ice despite the low ABV. Finishes semidry, a little woody, and sweet like cane juice. Sip this one neat, or better yet over an ice ball. You won’t be disappointed.

An intense aged & Blended Rum from Barbados aged for 18 months in Cognac casks. It has an aromatic birth with notes of cane sugar, wood, nuts, herbs & spices; while a rich life adds notes of butterscotch & coconut; that led to a long & complex death. June / October 2017 / July 2024 / March 2025

Definitely can taste the cognac with a little burn that disappears fast...I’m not that much of a fan...If you are a cognac drinker and want to try a rum I would definitely start here...it’s sweet to me but not as much as some would say...

It is amber with strong aroma of vanilla and ripe pineapple. The flavor is heavy of toasted marshmallow and oak. It is fairly fruity with pineapple being most prominent. It is a little sweet with a creamy texture.

Looneyhead 4.3

Rich all over. Nose of brown sugar, coconut, fruity popsicles, wood, vanilla, molasses and cherry. On the palate coconut, baking spices, pecan pie, cinnamon, wood fire. Long finish-sweet, rich, and fruity.
