gunpowder rye, Maryland style the named for the gunpowder river nose: Jasmine, rubber, petroleum, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon palate: wildflower, rye, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, chocolate rough and a little sweet, one of the better Maine whiskeys, but not something I would go out of my way to drink
About this bottle
Distilled at New England Distilling in Portland, Maine, Gunpowder Rye is a throwback to bold, old-style rye whiskey. It's young and it's rough, but that's the point. Unlike many rye whiskeys, this one uses no corn in its mash bill--just rye (70%) and barley (30%).

Very interesting. Sweet, I didn't find it too rough. A pronounced almost chapstick-like flavor. Not in an unpleasant way. Not sure if I'll buy it again, but it was interesting for sure!
Grass is the first thing I noticed, and then a cinnamon flavor. It seems a bit raw, but not bad. I will try this in a Manhattan. Drinking it neat was OK, but not my favorite.
Nose: Maple, lemon; Taste: Big Red Cinnamon, Lemon Lime, hint of Maple Syrups: Finish: Oak Tannin, Rye
Strong spicy smell. Very spicy, woody, floral. Easy to drink.
Maine should stick to making lobster rolls, not rye whiskey
