When you first open the bottle, you get strong nose of tequila, which didn't impress me. And the very first taste has a lot of the same qualities, but it quickly morphs into a smooth, buttery very flavorful rye. I really like this, not sure how it will go into a sazerac but it's great for sipping.
About this bottle
Anchor Distilling released Hotaling's single malt in commemoration of the Anson Parson's Hotaling Building, which is one of the few to survive the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Though there is no formal age statement, the 100% malted rye whiskey from a pot still was aged for more than 11 years in once used charred oak barrels.

Absolute garbage! Don't buy unless you like oak flavored moonshine. Young whiskey like this makes me so angry and they sell this shit for 60 + bucks. I understand young distilleries are trying to get in the market but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.
N: An early morning spring lawn after a cut. Almost like a tequila. Nice citrus and spice pop. P: Creamy butterscotch and fall flavors. Tongue pops of that nice baking spice. F: Long and flavorful. Full of oak, butter and baking spices.
Had the stout cask finish. It dances on the tongue and is delightful
Light in color, salty/sweet brine, vanilla, prune
Very unique, not a typical spicy rye. I like it.
