About this bottle

Old Forester 1924 is the fifth release in the brand's Whiskey Row Series. This Kentucky straight bourbon uses a different mash bill than OF's traditional recipe. Here, 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley is used. Aged for 10 years, the name and recipe marks a time during Prohibition when Old Forester acquired barrels from closed distilleries with different mash bills and sold it under the Old Forester name. Available nationwide beginning January 2024. (SRP $115)

Color: Nice deep Copper-Amber Nose: Great nose! Maple, leather and, if you can believe it, sweet tarts candies(!). A bit "musty" (in a good way); apple, and finally... although it's over-used, caramel. Added 5/10/24: Big whiff of banana on the nose, that I didn't get on the maiden voyage. Palate: (First pour drank neat) Syrupy mouthfeel, which took me slightly by surprise, with some nice cherry — and not the "cough syrup" kind that I've gotten from other bottles (not that I disliked that). Nice balance of spicy and sweet. Mild chest hug that lingers a while. Pretty darn smooth. (Second pour drank with a large ice ball) I've heard that Old Forester/Brown Forman is known for a "banana" profile. I'm not sure I've ever gotten that from the other OFs I've had (1897, 1910, 1920, 86 Proof), but I just got it on the first sip with ice. Getting some other things that I just can't pinpoint. Finish: Hmmm! Something akin to "campfire smoke" develops at the back of the throat on the finish. Nice! I love smokiness of any sort, at any point in the tasting Final Thoughts: There has been a lot of hype surrounding this OF release. As such, it's been one of those bottles that has proven elusive at SRP, with the scalpers snatching them up and charging double if not triple. I finally had the opportunity to grab a bottle today at SRP. Now, the SRP on this bottle is more than I typically like to spend. But I knew that I wouldn't find it for cheaper anywhere else, and that if I wanted it, I would have to pony up. I can't tell you that it's worth what I paid for it monetarily speaking. Only you can determine that. However, I CAN say that it was worth it to get to try it. Would I buy it again? Maybe... maybe not. Don't get me wrong. This is very good. But there are just a lot of very good bourbons out there for $30-$50 less.

Nose is pungent but subdued, with nougat, black cherry, ripe date, fig, milk chocolate, complex wood blends (oak, mahogany, teak), tiramisu, and macadamia nut. Complex and inviting. Palate comes out swinging and is very “on brand” with cherry, furniture varnish, leather, fig newton, tobacco, toffee, marshmallow, and butterscotch. Flavors have depth and are well integrated. Medium-length finish brings French vanilla, caramel, delicate sweet oak, a hint of pepper, tangy tangerine, cardamom, mint, and clove. Interesting that the vanilla/caramel doesn’t present until the finish instead of the front palate like so many other whiskies. Mouthfeel is light and buttery. Excellent whiskey and easily the best Old Forester product I have had to date. There’s just an elevated level of complexity, depth, and smoothness here. I paid a slightly elevated $159.99 and while it isn’t going to be a rebuy at that price, a fact that speaks more to my budget than the quality of the juice.

The nose is a burst of floral rye, perfectly matched by charred oak that quickly gives way vanilla and brown sugar. It is absolutely intoxicating and surprisingly offers no burn no matter much you take it in. The palate is light and oily and immediately fills the mouth with an intense burst of black pepper. It is immediately chewy and oaky vanilla fills the corner of the mouth. This is rich, full and intense, and while not exactly complex, it is those factors that make this stunning. Everything is perfectly balanced and addicting. The finish is medium long and rich, with chewy pepperiness and oak lingering. As soon as you take a sip, you're already looking forward to the next. This is remarkable, but held back a bit by the finish that ends too soon.

Definitely a very good pour Big fan of the 1920 Different mash bill, so definitely differences between the 1920 and the 1924. The 1924 is beyond solid at 100 proof The mouth feel is great There is complexity and balance It is a more refined pour than the 1920 and is recognizable as the younger sibling of King of Kentucky. Out of the 4 expressions I have had with this mash bill its my favorite aside from King of Kentucky The old Early Times is pretty good as well The Cooper Craft is good but I rate it as the lowest of the 4 expressions Bottom line i like this mash bill, I really like this pour

NEAT NOSE - Rich, candied Cherry Note, Toasted Oak, and Caramel PALATE - Rich, sweet, decadent oak soaked in cherry syrup with flashes of brown sugar. FINISH - The finish is long. First, there’s alot of oak, somewhat tannic. Then, there’s a huge rush of vanilla that tries to take over but is then overshadowed by the lingering oak. The finish is a wave of sweet and tannic oak. BUY? - I don’t like the price for this one, but it’s good. I think its easily the best of the Whiskey Row Series. BUY AGAIN? - I hesitated to back this up but I’d likely try to replace when this one is low or out.

I had a great day, since i got to try a new whiskey today. It was an Old Forester 1924, 10 year old, bottled at 50%abv (100% proof) On the nose, i find it Metallic, coffee beans & red spices. Chocolate. On the palate, i get red fruit jam, toffee. Dry bread crumbs; Mettalic/copperish; Chocolate. Milk chocolate. Aftertaste is all about notes of cigars, Hay and chocolate. Overall this was an incredible dram, super recommended. Full of flavor and enough power to be really enjoyable. My score for it is 92 over 100.
