About this bottle

Introduced in 1989 along with their Añejo release is the now iconic Patrón Silver Tequila. Co-founded by John Paul DeJoria (of John Paul Mitchell hair products), Patrón first introduced the world to "ultra-premium" tequila. The brand's standard line is produced by using half tahona-crushed agave and half modern roller-mill crushed agave. The agaves are sourced from Los Altos, Jalisco and are slow-roasted in an oven before fermentation in wooden vats. The late Francisco Alcaraz was their original Master Distiller & Blender who created the recipe for the brand. It was initially produced at the Siete Leguas distillery until Patrón built their own in 2002.

It has a pretty bland nose. There's some vegetation and something a tad bitter and some hints of cardboard. Maybe a brief scent of lime. The palate is decently sweet with some nice lime notes keeping its agave sweetness from getting out of hand. There's some spice that goes well with the earth and there's a hint of smoke. It's decently rich and full, but not exceptionally complex. It's a sipper for sure, but we'll overpriced given it's relatively mild and flat profile. To say it's far from the punch and life of Cabeza and Fortaleza Blanco is a gross understatement. It's a sipper, but not a delightful one. Compared to those, this is sweet and mineral without much to say for itself. The mouthfeel is still decently viscous. It's smooth too, like a disappointing añejo. It's less sweet and off-kilter than Jimador Blanco. It also has less of an interesting spice profile to it, but mainly I appreciate the reduced syrupy sweetness. It also isn't as strong though. I'd take this over Jimador Blanco, though not for the price difference. This is a little bit richer than 3 Amigos Blanco, but possibly not as complex. It's a surprisingly tough call between the two of them. Ultimately, either is a decent sipper. Frankly, I think I like the 3 Amigos a little bit better, so I could see it getting a bump to a 13, but this is staying at 12 most likely. Herbal, spicy, vegetal, and mineral scents. The palate is spicy and minty with a bit of agave sweetness that is on the lighter side but brings in some vegetal flavors along with mineral. It has decent complexity and flavor, though it isn't anything too special. There's a lot of spicy harshness. It's sippable enough, but it isn't anything special. There's some green pineapple bringing in fruit. The finish is a tad chalky. Unfortunately, there are some flaws and it just isn't that interesting, though it is far from bad.

Nose - fresh cooked agave, vegetal and floral notes, lime zest, mint, subtle pepper, moderate to high ethanol burn. Taste - cooked agave, white pepper, grapefruit, sweet lime, citrus zest, spearmint, floral notes, grassiness, salt, moderate alcohol bite, finishing medium length with citrus, mint, and cooked agave flavors. This is a quality tequila, albeit a bit boring. I like that cooked agave is the first note I pick up on the nose and palate. What stands out most is the crispness. The flavors are all treble notes, as opposed to the earthy, fusty bass notes I perceive with many other tequilas. There’s almost an effervescence to the whole experience, a bit like drinking a lime LaCroix. However, there is no value here. At ~$50 near me, this is more expensive than El Tesoro and is creeping dangerously close to Fortaleza prices, both of which are significantly better products in my opinion. I can see this being a really good introduction to well made tequila for the uninitiated, as you get some good cooked agave flavors and there are no challenging elements to negotiate.

This is a top shelf tequila that for some reason has been underrated by people who don't know how to discern high-quality spirits when they try them. Patron is hand-crafted from 100% Weber Blue Agave and is distilled in small batches to ensure quality over quantity. This silver tequila makes world-class margaritas, but can be enjoyed straight as well. Its aroma is fruity and herbal. Its flavor is spicy, herbal, and earthy as well as rich and smooth. It has a tart edge, but it is balanced with surprising sweetness. A slight oily flavor and silky texture remind you of its superior pedigree. It is smooth and sweet with a light peppery finish. Drink chilled in a margarita or room-temperature straight. You'll enjoy all the well-executed high quality flavors and attributes of this world-class silver tequila!

Tasting- neat in tasting glass Nose- powdered sugar with black pepper. I detect a hint of lime skin ever so slight Taste- sweet agave nectar. A little sweeter than I had bargained for after nosing it. Would have like some more of those peppery notes to come through. A bit thin, but a likeable flavor all in all. There is a hint of green melon on the way out. Finish- not a whole lot going on here. Finish is on the over ripe green melon or cantaloupe note. Overall- This is a decent value, but I fear you are not getting much complexity at all. It's a bit artificial and one note for me. I would have loved if some of the spicier notes in the nose came through at the end. It is far from bad, but it just doesnt really grab my interest.

When it comes to tequila cocktails, this is fantastic. The best silver tequila for individual Palomas and margaritas! It imparts the perfect flavor in a classic margarita. Very smooth (a little too smooth) and great on its own too. Best agaves and production processes are used hence the Great quality! Patron got me back into drinking tequila after the horrible Cuervo experiences when I was young. They care about making great quality tequila. May not be the best tasting but that’s subjective anyway. Patron has the knowledge, capacity, capability and the willingness to compete with the like of Fortaleza and I have a feeling they soon will by improving their baseline tequilas. Definitely underrated!

September 16, 2021. From a 50 ml miniature. Half an ounce in a Glencairn glass. Nice agave herbal nose, pleasant on the palate, and as usual for me, the nose is more complex than on the palate. The palate is almost an afterthought. A very necessary afterthought, I’d add! Okay, readers, what I’m doing here is actually a side-by-each comparison of Patron Silver versus Don Julio Blanco. Nope, not a blind test, so not scientific whatsoever, but hey, y’know? After several small sippy-sips I’m gonna give the nod to Don Julio, but not by a lot. Just checked prices at the BC government store, and there is price fluctuation from time to time, but they’re both currently listed in the 750 ml at $79.99 CAD
