Ok so Im in the minority in liking Rebel Yell. I thinks its a great value and a solid wheater. This is supposed to be the highline version of RY with more proof and longer aging so I had high hopes. Poured neat, darker with better legs. Nose has more weight to it for sure. Same notes of cornbread, cherry and dust but amped up with some heat. Mouth feel is still thin but remains soft. Palate is more vibrant with cherry vanilla, oaky cinnamon and good heat. Body is still lacking which I think is just a wheater characteristic and cherry is quite dominant. Finishes with cherry and oak. Im finding this too sweet with more cherry than I want. I don't know what happened but it almost tastes like one of those flavored whiskies, hardly tastes like bourbon at all imo, not good. Adding water does rein in the cherry but I'll take standard RY for half the money and Larceny or Makers are much better for same cost. Definitely would not repurchase.............61/100........fortunately it mixes well with coke as the strong cherry and wheat blend nicely creating a tasty combo
About this bottle
Introduced in 2008, this is made at the Bernheim distillery by Heaven Hill for the Luxco corporation. This is an NAS (Non-Age Statement) whiskey though it is widely believed that it is an older whiskey than the standard Rebel Yell. The mash bill consists of corn, wheat, and malted barley, though the bottle does not state in what percentages. In 2015, this product got an updated packaging and name from Rebel Reserve to Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve.

This is what I call "campfire bourbon" which isn't a bad thing when put in the right frame of mind. Appearance is yellow-gold, and a bit thin but not runny. Nose is marshmallow and pastry with vanilla. This carries consistently into the palate. The finish is quick, with a burst of warming heat but then kind of gets astringent. A tiny bit of water takes care of that without killing flavors. All and all I would give it 3.5 stars. It is a sit around the fire sipper on a fall night kind of whiskey. Straightforward and old fashioned with no tricks. Not bad for what I paid at 13.99/bottle.
NOSE Caramel, oak, biscuity, honey, dried cherries, cinnamon and a touch herbal. Significantly richer and warmer aroma over the traditional Rebel Yell. Not crazy deep or anything, but a big improvement. PALATE Oak, caramel, vanilla cake, citrus frosting, baking spice, dried cherries, hazelnuts and a touch herbal. Again, the Rebel Yell Rebel Reserve is better than the regular RY ever was and it comes through like a decent bourbon. This is pleasantly drinkable. FINISH Medium -> Oak, darkly sweet and fruity fades to herbal spice.
Better the second time around after bottle had the chance to breathe. Nose is caramel corn, and mashmallow. Palate is sweet with a pleasant crackerjack flavor, some butter and pastry. Finish is where it drops off a bit with an astringent burn. You can cool it with water without hurting the flavor. All and all this is a 3-3.5 on merit alone, a solid 4 if you consider the value. I like it and would buy it again
The nose is sweet with grilled fruit, marshmallow, cooked sugar, sweet corn and a hint of oak. The cooked sugar carries strongly into the palate while the oak features more strongly as well, while the grilled fruit rounds it out. The finish is medium and sweet, with cooked sugar and oak fading alongside faint hints of brown sugar and grilled fruit.
The bourbon here is a steal at the price point. Nose is interesting with some honey and fruit and even some cinnamon. Taste is similar but with more baking spices and honey. Finish is good with a mild burn, spicy and a hint of licorice. Good stuff
