N: Apple juice, caramel, toffee, bread pudding. Vanilla and pear. Maybe light hints of tobacco and raisins. More orchard fruit with a dash of cough syrup. Noticeable ethanol presence. P: Ripe stone fruit, peach tea, creamy vanilla custard. Some hints of plums, raisins, and maybe dried red fruit. Bit of heat mid-palate leading into the finish, but it's pretty mild. Finish is put-you-to-sleep gentle: lingering vanilla, sour fruit, wet wood, and a little more apple juice for good measure. I wanted more from this. It plays everything safe and comes across bland in the process. There's just nothing that really stands out, except maybe the apple juice notes, which make me think more of hanging with my kid at daycare, which I would love to do, but probably not while sipping an 18 year old scotch. Review #4 - Whisk(e)y #3 Nose - dominated by sweet fruit, baked apples and honey, being sweet and slightly floral. It is a rather rich nose, and the alcohol cannot be distinguished at all. Palate - very smooth, with barely any alcohol burn. The taste is special, very heavy, rich, same as the nose, especially compared to what I drank so far. The taste of malt and walnuts is very prominent, together with that of honey, fruit, dark chocolate, mostly sweet, but there is also an aroma of grains. The whisky is viscuous, oily. Finish - medium-long, dry towards the end, with a slight spiciness tingling the tongue. After the addition of ice, this latter taste is amplified dramatically, being very peppery, with the sweetness being diminished. At the start it did seem slightly overwhelming, but I believe I did start to appreciate it the more I drank it. Nice, smooth and floral 18yo blend. I don't understand why this whisky is so criticized here, maybe because of the commercial brand? Exactly the kind of Whisky I like. Nice light amber colour. On the nose a pinch of cinnamon, dark chocolate and a bouquet of tulips. Lightly bitter on the tongue with hints of ripe blueberries, vanilla and winter spices. Soft mouthfeel. Very mellow aftertaste, barely any burn, bit dry, some tannins, lightly floral, not unpleasant. But: taste dissapears quickly and takes al the saliva with it. That means: one star reduction.
A balanced, Blended Scotch Whisky by the Strathisla Distillery in Speyside, Scotland made from 'over 20 of Scotland's finest & rarest Scotches aged for at least 18 years. It has a rich birth with notes of buttery mint toffee, sweet citrus, malted barley, sherry, baked apple, caramel & dark chocolate; while a complex life adds notes of Sherry, nut. butterscotch, floral, oranges, lemons & dark chocolate; that leads to a complex & balanced death with notes of with hints of spice & smoke. 90/100
Nose: friendly, mild spices, vanilla sweetness, orchard fruits. Slightly floral. Palate: balanced, mouth covering sweetness and spices evolving together. Almond. Spices and dryness getting dominant for subsequent sips. Finish: long, oaky, chocolate, nuts. Overall, well balanced, complex, nice dram, but I am missing a bit more character. I agree with S4D member, who said "I like more whisky in my whisky" in their review.
