2019 edition 114.4 proof Batch 002, Barrel # 14527. Nose is full of “green”. Green apple, green hay, green oak (almost closer to pine/cedar), dill, thyme, with some baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger) thrown in. Hint of banana that I am digging. After a while an umami note as well. This is complex, and leaves you wanting to dive into it’s considerable depths. Some ethanol when you huff deeply, but forgivable given the proof. Palate features typical MGP brightness with caramel covered Granny Smith apple, leather, pine, light vanilla, tobacco, leafy herbs, and oak. Biggest strength is its integration; flavors blend almost seamlessly. If you like aged MGP, this is going to be your jam. Proof helps deliver sufficient heft. Finish goes on for what seems like days delivering the spice bloom promised in the nose. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, prickly, and effervescent and fits the profile very well. A wonderful example of what higher aged MGP has to offer. At 99.99 for a ten year age statement, I feel this is priced appropriately so neither a value nor a ripoff. To give an idea of how this stacks against other MGP sourced offerings, I’d rather pay more for this than say Smoke Wagon UCUF, but I can get a similar profile with Belle Meade Reserve for half the cost which keeps this from being a total slam dunk.
Redemption Barrel Proof 10 Year High-Rye Bourbon (2017 Edition)
About this bottle
Redemption's Barrel Proof Collection first started in late 2015. These limited edition whiskeys are offered with the same mashbills as their standard bottlings, but are bottled at cask strength, each year's batch will varying slightly. This high-rye bourbon has a mashbill of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley. Bottled at 57.4% ABV, it matured for 10 years in new, charred American oak. 2017 marks a new look for the Barrel Proof Collection with wider, squat bottles.

Just picked a bottle of this up (6/5/2019), so I'm guessing it's not the 2017 edition; but it's 10yr Barrel Proof High-Rye Bourbon, 114.4 proof. The nose is classic MGP bourbon - oak, brown sugar, orange peel, baking spices, leather and some varnish (but in a good way). Enough heat to let you know it's barrel proof, but not to the point of being harsh. Palate follows the nose - brown sugar, oak, and baking spices dominate. There's an earthy quality but not to the point of adding off-notes. Finish is oaky but not astringent, the sweetness lingers along with some rye spice (but none of the herbal/dill notes that I get from MGP straight ryes). After adding a few drops of water and giving this some time to breathe in the glass, it just got better, with the brown sugar notes becoming more prominent (but without diminishing the oak and spice). All in all this is a really good example of well-aged MGP bourbon, and at $75 it was a relative bargain compared to similarly aged offerings from other NDP's. Stuff like Boone County and Widow Jane are a few bucks cheaper but also substantially lower in proof. Belle Meade Cask strength can be found for under $70, but it's NAS and obviously younger. Strangely, this was $20 cheaper than the Redemption 9yr low-rye barrel strength on the same shelf.
NOSE Oak, dried dark fruit, caramel, spice, brownies, copper, candy sweetness, grain sweetness, oil and a touch of wood smoke. The aroma is so freaking deep and rich with oak and those darkly sweet and fruity notes, though what really draws me into the Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon is the pops of spice and the light whisp of wood smoke. PALATE Oak, dried dark fruit, brown sugar, dilly spice, sugar cookies, copper, candy sweetness, grain sweetness, oil and a touch of cocoa and wood smoke. Similar to the aroma, but pulls in a bit more bakery sweetness and brightens it up a touch without losing that intriguing wood smoke. FINISH Long -> Oak, spice, brown sugar, copper and wood smoke. Starts like a chunk of oak but fades out to a sweety-n-spicy-n-smoky chunk of oak.
I found this bourbon to be an exceptional pour. Classic bourbon nose with hints of red fruit. Great thick mouth feel, the pallet starts with a little sweetness then comes the pepper. Vanilla, caramel, barrel, a touch of apple peal and leather leads to a long peppery finish. Love it, I made the mistake of bringing it to a family birthday party and just about finished it off! Glad I bought 2!!!
What a great bottle. If u like complexity and something different, this is a great bottle. Its aged well, its smooth, its got a hint of rye whiskey but the richness of bourbon. Its not cheap, but i’m happy i own it because its just different!
This is freaking amazing. I have to admit, initially, I wasn't overly impressed. However, it has become well balanced after letting the bottle sit on the shelf for a few weeks. I'm going to buy another bottle. Cheers
