Redwood Empire Foggy Burl single malt whiskey Batch #3. Named after a 346.4' tall, 13.5' diameter000 year old California redwood. 100% malted barley (12 different malted barley varietals), toasted and char 3 oak cask, 55 barrels in this small lot of Batch #3, 94 proof, distilled grain to glass in Sonoma County, California by master distiller John Duckhorn (2017-25?). Tasting neat. Golden straw in the glass with good coating legs. Nose full of malted grain and grape must, soft and sweet, with a little vanilla and spice in the far back. Really wonderful start. In the mouth, sweet cereal and stone fruit, soft spices, peppermint, and a little ethanol. Rich mouthfeel, soft but not oily. Finish builds from that sweet pepper grass spicy note and adds a little oak and lemon balm citrus. Finish is average length, clean, herbal rather than sour, leaving you ready for another taste. This is a beautiful American style single malt, not as rich or oaked as some others (Westward or Stranahans?) but nicely balanced. An ice cube tamps down the spice and accentuates the sweet herbal notes. I'm going to enjoy this bottle and keep thinking about it. A little pricy perhaps, but so are the better American single malts.
