Nose: chocolatey and warm! Something on the nose that is unique to american whiskey that I'm working on trying to pick out. Just read that there is 12 Y.O. oloroso sherry in this whiskey, that's definitely what the scent is from. Vanilla extract, orange peel, and dark fruit as well. Taste 1: get a little bit of a rye spice that quickly fades and turns into a burnt sugar and caramel with orange and chocolate. Slight hint of leather. This is a straight up butterscotch bomb!! Yum! Nose 2: getting that chocolate orange candy. The one that is shaped like an orange but made out of chocolate. Not a ton of oak but it is present as the residual scent of a campfire. Taste 2: brown sugar and caramel, orange and pear. That butterscotch is quite strong. Very easy to drink. Received this as a gift from a friend and I am pleasantly surprised. This is a very unique type of whiskey, almost like a sherry cask finished bourbon but with a bigger punch and funk of the sherry. Would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different that they will enjoy.
About this bottle
J. Rieger & Co. is a distillery that was established in 1887. Long since gone, this brand was resurrected in 2010 by Ryan Maybee, partner at the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange in Kansas City and Andy Rieger, great-great-great grandson of Jacob Rieger, the original founder. This is made from a blend of whiskeys: straight bourbon, light corn, and straight rye whiskey. To this, a small amount of 15 year-old oloroso sherry is added not exceeding 2.5% of the volume. This addition was a common occurrence in American whiskey in the 1800s, but had fallen out of favor after Prohibition. This is legally allowable under the generic "American whiskey" category.

An intense, American Blended Whiskey by J. Rieger & Co. Distillery in Kansas City, Missouri crafted with a blend of Straight Bourbon Whiskey, light corn Whiskey & Straight Rye Whiskey along with a 'drop' of 15 YO Oloroso Sherry from the Williams & Humbert Bodega in Jerez, Spain, aged for a minimum of 4 years & bottled at 46% ABV. It has an aromatic birth with notes of Sherry, caramel, butterscotch & corn Whiskey; while a rich & spice life adds notes of sweet corn Whiskey, dried fruits, almonds, allspice & bitter chocolate; that led to a bold & warming death of medium length with notes of oak & rye spice. December 2022
Maple syrup, caramel, and vanilla are almost committing an assault on my nostrils with this one. There's a subtle smokiness that's letting you know there's a splash of bourbon in this blend as well as a hint of dark choclate. First taste is rich and quite pleasant on the front of the palate. In the mid-range you find all the spices of a lovely rye but going down she's high octane. Adding an ice cube really helps this one mellow out and become an enjoyable sipper. Would really work well in an old fashioned too though.
N - cherry, apple pie…. Nose is really nice P - medium mouthfeel, Honey, caramelized sugar, cinnamon, F - slightly sour with a little oak… finish doesn’t hold up to the front end A solid dram. Picked this up in KC at Rieger’s. Loved the distillery and the history. My wife nailed the slide too!
Flaviar Advent Day 7- tasted blind. Tastes young, cheap and harsh. Strong maple, fresh wood, and ethanol burn. Edit: Once I found out what this was, can definitely pick out the sherry and the flavors in this whiskey make more sense but still don't love this.
Nose: Strawberry Jam, vanilla, spice, oak. Taste: Sweet and fruity up front. Spice heat comes out surrounding tongue. Cinnamon clove. Fruit tastes like strawberry candy. Finish: Long, spicy, and bitter. Finish fades dry.
