About this bottle
Tullamore D.E.W. Original is a blended Irish whiskey comprised of single malt, grain, and pot still whiskey. It's triple distilled and aged in three types of casks: refill barrels, ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. D.E.W. are the initials of a Mr. Daniel E. Williams, a gentleman that worked for Tullamore back in the late 1880's. He made his way up the ranks from shoveling barley to Distillery Manager to owner. He stamped his initials on the bottles as a sign of quality and they have remained since.

Typical Irish blended whiskey nose but richer and deeper than most. Subtle malty sweet caramel, light orchard fruit-apples and pears, a bit of banana, with a hint of vanilla, a drop of honey, and some acetone. After an initial kick of warm, tingling spice and sharp citrusy zest, the flavors follow suit with the nose, starting with sweet malt and grain, sugar in the raw, light honey, and vanilla taffy. Then it takes a turn towards fruit with white peach, Anjou pear, Ruby grapefruit, and finally a touch of wood. The body is decent, especially for the low ABV, and rather silky. The legs, while being a bit quick, are well defined and attractive with heavy teardrops. The finish is short, a little dry and somewhat tannic, even metallic. A touch of sweetness remains, mostly in the form of Juicy Fruit chewing gum, plus a whisp of cinnamon spice. If you’re on the fence about trying this whiskey my advice is just D.E.W. it. The “original triple blend Irish whiskey” certainly does earn its name, functioning as a low-cost standard by which to judge most other Irish blends. All three spirits seem to lend some flavor, but not tons. At the core of both the nose and palate is that very traditional sweet, bready quality that Irish blends so often have. It’s accompanied by suuuper subtle fruit notes, and the sherry casks lend an ever so gentle spice to it. These flavors play together so smoothly that none of them really jump out, and you’d be easily forgiven for missing a note or two. To sum it up, its wickedly easy to drink, and very balanced, but not the liveliest whiskey you’ll ever try. It’s not exceptionally memorable, but it is smooth as butter and versatile. Which is why, for $25, you might as well keep this on hand for mixers, shots, and maybe the occasional sip. (sidenote: plays realllly nice with ginger ale if that’s your thing.)
Review #12 - Whisk(e)y #8 Nose - soft, inviting, opens up very nicely, with vanilla and honey. It is noticeably more refined than Bushmills Original or Jameson Original. Taste - smooth and well-balanced, with sweet vanilla, honey and a light peppery spice adding some depth (thankfully not unbalanced as on the aforementioned whiskies, lacking that intensity). Finish - light and sweet, with a touch of oak, short, maybe short-medium. It is a very pleasant whiskey, and I do recommend it. Cracked open the mini-bottle and took a whiff: smells just like a light American beer (e.g., Coors Light). Seriously. So i dumped it into my rocks glass -- neat, of course -- and took another nasal inhalation. Yup, that is Coors Light if i ever smelled it! Oh gawd, what's it gonna taste like? Oooh, okay, that ain't no beer. Whew! I'm getting smooth honey. Nice. Hints of orange peel in the retro-hale. Getting some vanilla as well. Wow, not bad, not bad at all. Overall, honey & that traditional "Irish whiskey" flavors are the most dominant. Rating based on neat sipping.
