Of the three rums I acquired today (Botrán and Clement VSOP being the others), this is most...rummy of the bunch, at least insofar as what I tend to expect in rum. The sugarcane is more at the forefront, with a brown sugar and spice nose, and a palate that tastes...well, like sugar cane, wrapped in a buttery, toasty package. There's a subtle, but distinct, minerality present, too, that reminds of the "gunflint" notes found in French wines like Pouilly-Fume; all of these continue out into a long finish. I could see myself drinking this all day long while lying in a hammock in the shade along some pristine, isolated Caribbean beach. I think I just gave myself a vacation idea...
About this bottle
Rapidly growing Dominican Republic brand Ron Barceló produces rums they distill from 100% Dominican sugar cane juice. The Imperial rum gets finished for two years in French oak barrels, stacked horizontally like in rickhouses, as compared to Barceló's traditional aging process which uses bourbon barrels left vertically standing. The rum used for Imperial is aged for between four and 10 years overall. This is sold elsewhere at 38% abv (and is what is reviewed here), but is sold at 40% abv in the US.

In my country it is sold at ABV40. My bottle has a serial number 26219 X, bottled on May 25, 2020. N24, P20, F22, B21. The organoleptic profile is rich and versatile: honey, macadamia nuts, syrup, cough medicine, herbs, boiled condensed milk, pickled plum, dry wood, roll-up tobacco. Maybe even too much of everything but better rich than poor. Finished the bottle with great pleasure but in the end decided that the taste was a bit harsher than desired. Still, it is very good.
Aroma of oak and definitely bourbon, all coated with molasses. Neat sipping flavors are bourbon, oak, and what i can only describe as brown sugary alcohol that coats the sides of my tongue. Retro-hale is dark cola/soft drink. While just okay for sipping, this works really well for mixing, particularly the simple but ubiquitous "rum-n-coke". It's not overly sweet and provides the rum flavor (and kick!) without being overwhelming. Rating based on neat sipping.
Both the Imperial and Imperial onyx are excellent. Imperial is a bit smoky with notes of caramel, tobacco, vanilla, and spices. Onyx dials up on the smoke and other flavors listed above with the charring process with onyx stones, giving the onyx vegetal flavors
Amber gold color in the glass. Vanilla, burnt oak and spice on the nose. Burnt sugar, vanilla and citrus on the pallet. Dry finishes with vanilla sugar and a tingling burn on the tongue. Not the most complex rum, but a bigvanilla bomb.
