Starts nicely with notes of honey and vanilla, heats up quickly then all the flavors follow. Grape/banana/baking spice, apricot, raisin. Flavors fade away to a sharp dry woodyness. This is where the oak lives. Wood lingers in the dry aftertaste for a short time b4 fading into a dry mouth begging for another drink. I got this bottle on clearance for $25 worth way more in my opinion.
About this bottle
Founders Timo and Ashby Marshall lead an all-female team at Spirit Works Distillery, a Sonoma County producer of grain-to-glass spirits. Their portfolio includes vodka, gin, sloe gin (a nod to Timo's English heritage), and whiskey. Spirit Works Straight Rye Whiskey is made from a mashbill of mostly rye, and all the grains used are milled, mashed, fermented, and distilled on site. It ages for at least 2 years in 53-gallon new, charred American oak barrels before being bottled at 45% ABV without chill-filtration. Review from barrel 13-0020.

Smells like potpourri and green apples. Reminds me of a high end candle I wouldn’t buy but don’t mind as a background aroma. The taste is similar, like baked apples with nutmeg, cedar, honey, and toasted coconut. It’s pretty strong.
Syrupy and grassy on the nose. Taste is overwhelmingly wheaty with a hint of floral. Slight fire in the mouth that subsides into the belly. Aftertaste is mild and sightly bitter.
vanilla, thick and buttery, slight cinnamon, leather, oak. smooth nose and hot on the way down.
Spicy, herbal, crisp distilled flavor. Could use a splash of water to open it up
A macho mix of leather, earth, and smoke with spice. Almost scotchy.
