About this bottle

Tres Agaves was founded in 2008 by restaurateur and tequila aficionado, Eric Rubin, and the former president of Cabo Wabo Enterprises, Barry Angus. Interested in creating a premium tequila brand, they released their first products in 2010. Their reposado style tequila is made with organic blue weber agave grown in the Tequila Valley region of Jalisco. After double distillation in a pot still, the tequila ages for 6-9 months in American oak barrels previously used to mature bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. It is bottled at 40% ABV. Additive free.

Those bourbon and whiskey barrels really come through nicely. Lots of woodiness. Literally tastes like you took their blanco offering and mixed in a small splash of something like Four Roses or Elijah Craig. It’s got some dark undertones that start revealing themselves more in the long finish, which seems to linger and evolve longer than it should at this price point. Tannins grip the back of the throat long after the well hidden ethanol burn fades. It does have a flaw, though… it’s not El Tesoro, which is lighter, brighter, and better balanced.

Missing the agave taste almost completely, but the ex-bourbon barrel tastes are at the forefront. I doubt I'd spend $35 on it again; I don't want my tequila to taste like my whisky. Might be a decent mixer but I'd rather buy a nice blanco with more of the agave hints. Very sweet, slight vanilla... if I were to put this out for blind tasting with American or Irish whiskys you'd be hard pressed to call this a tequila.

Good value tequila. The bourbon cask aging flavors makes up for any thinness in the tequila. I’ll mainly use this as a mixer but it is not terrible neat. Some ethanol harshness to it but not much. Decent amount of grassy agave flavor, too.

Cero 3.0

Bittersweet with a definite earthy flavor. A little burn going down but overall enjoyable.

Ryenot 5.0

Lovey gentle vanilla, and cedar, with pepper and fresh herbs, great pour for the price.

I've had their blanco and really liked it. The reposado is blah.
