Did not like it at all. The nose and the initial taste was ok. But but but, the aftertaste we very grassy. Did not care for that at all. One person at our table described the aftertaste as Mildew. I have never tasted mildew before but I have a feel that it probably tastes like that. However, it must be our (my and one other person) palates. The rest of my drinking mates were ok with it. Now I that I am stuck with this bottle, I will finish it off by making all kind of whiskey cocktails that can potentially hide its flavor profile. I would strongly recommend to try it out at a bar first before commiting a full bottle. Incidentally, that recommendation might also be applied for other commitements in life as well... haha. ;)
Received a blind sample from a friend. Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Caramel, apples and graham crackers. Palate: Dry oak tannins and a note that's hard to place. Almost like rubber. Finish: Medium length with mild heat. Splash: No new flavors are revealed, but dry oak is diminished. Overall: 7/10 - This is a fine dram, and I suspect that it's been in oak for a while. The proof doesn't seem particularly high but the odd note in the palate makes me curious.
Classic spicy rye nose with strong perfumey floral notes (violets) I’ve come to expect with previous Whistle Pig bottlings. Flavor is spicy vegetal and alcohol heavy with some mint, again a signature trait. There is an ashy taste on the finish. Water sweetens the nose and reveals more complexity with a strong citrus and wall-plaster thing dominating. Flavor however becomes bland and muted. This is a big loser for me. Some interesting things happen on the nose, but the flavor is desperately wanting.
An intense, Straight Rye Whiskey by Master Distiller Dave Pickerell for Raj Bhakta in Vermont made 100% from Rye grain & age for ten years. It has an aromatic birth with notes of grains, wood, herbs & spices; while a rich life adds notes of rye, butterscotch, honey, pralines with vanilla & a hint of mint; that led to a bold & woody death with notes of toffee, charred, burnished & wood spice. May / July 2018 / January 2019 / November 2020 / October 2022
Grain comes through nice in the nose along with baking spices, carmel and a musty wood note. Taste is full rye with a heavy spiciness without being sharp. Rye covers the traditional carmel notes and goes into an herbaceous musty wood finish. Decent, but wouldnt buy again due to price. Many better value aged ryes out there.
