About this bottle

Avión Tequila revamped its packaging in mid-2018 to reflect the single origin for its agave. All agaves used in the production of the tequila is sourced from the town of Jesus Maria, located at 7,000 ft. above sea level in the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. The tequila is distilled in small batches and finished with a "proprietary" ultra-slow filtration. Each bottle is hand-filled and labeled with batch and bottle number and displays the number of months the tequila is aged. For the añejo, that is 24 months in American oak ex-bourbon barrels.

This is a bit of a departure from my bread and butter. I had it years ago, found out it had been discontinued, decided I needed a bottle of my own before it was gone for good. Let’s check it out. Nose: Floral notes with a heavy vanilla pop. Grapefruit and lemon. Agave. Green bell pepper. Pear. Peach. Palate: Cactus and agave. Vanilla. Mango. Vanilla. Coconut. Green bell pepper. Toffee. Peach tea. Finish: Agave and cactus. Green bell pepper. Mango. Vanilla and toffee. Peach. Relatively short. Tequila is by no means something I’d consider to be in my wheelhouse. It’s my second spirit to the broad category of whisk(e)y, and yet I couldn’t say that tequila makes up 0.1% of my spirit intake. So as an amateur in this category, I’ll say this is pretty good. Easy-going. Standard tequila notes with a few wrinkles thrown in that distinguish this one. I am a big fan of the bolder and brasher, higher ABV whiskies with funky barrel selections or peat influence, and yet with tequila, I prefer a delicate touch and balanced profile. That’s exactly what this experience yields. At $53, this is well worth the price of entry. It’s a shame that it’s been discontinued, so hopefully I can snag one more before it’s all said and done. 3.75/5. Solid stuff.

Let sit for about 5 minutes. 👀: Very pale golden hay with glistening notes, legs don't stay for very long; 👃: Syrupy sweetness on the front end, not your typical agave scent, vanilla and roasted pineapple and dark chocolate flecks; 👅: Very light on the tongue and oily, pineapple juice and tropical fruit notes, chocolate; 🏁: Doesn't linger, beautiful sweet notes throughout, this is one good tequila!

An intense Agave Spirit from Mexico aged of a minimum of 1 year in oak barrels. It has an aromatic birth with notes of roasted agave, wood, earth, fruits, nuts, herbs & spices; while a rich life adds notes of cherry, peach, caramel, vanilla & maple; that led to a long & bold death with notes of oak, coconut mint & rosemary. April 2017 / December 2019

Starts sweet followed by a peppery alcohol burn (warm). Heat lingers, makes you sweat a bit. Ends sweet on the lips. Good. Smooth. Tastes good. Not too sweet and not to spicy. Smells very good. Sweet and caramely. I like this one.

Smooooooth. Dangerously smooth. There’s bite, but it’s well balanced (hidden?) within the delicate flavors dancing around. Well worth the price - which was mid-range.
