About this bottle

One of Brazil’s only female cachaça distillers, Katia Espírito Santo, oversees a sustainable distillation process that begins with the sugarcane that’s grown without pesticides and hand-harvested at her farm, Fazenda da Quinta in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The cane is crushed by a spring-fed water wheel and the fermented juice is distilled in copper pot stills. Avuá Cachaça Prata is rested in stainless steel tanks for six months before being hand-bottled.

Avua has many different cachacas on the market, many featuring different barrel types. This is the unaged offering and while pretty good on its own, it's even better in cocktails. On the nose I get a vegetal and tropical fruit notes. The palate has the grassy notes, but also sourness (lemony) and a bit more ethanol than I would expect. It is less sweet than other cachacas. The finish has some decent burn and bitterness. There are better unaged cachacas for drinking neat (Novo Fogo), but its decent enough. This one shines though in cocktails and that is the main purpose for buying a bottle of this. It is a step up from Leblon, but at a higher cost. Is it worth the extra $15? For most, probably not and especially if you like your cocktails sweet, then I would stick to Leblon.

Funk is evident on the nose, lightly floral. Earthy palate, light body, little bit of grass, which becomes more prominent on the finish, which is a little dry and bitter.

Nikkithebee 3.0

Yeasty, bread starter nose! Sweet and sour, like a box of raisins. That note continues through and joins creamy grass and light fruit, like bright underripe pear.

Aged One 3.5

Bright, sweet vegetal nose. Unmistakably cachaça. Mineral water, cirtus rind, sugary bread. Clean and well put together.
