An elegant rhum Agricole from Martinique by Clément; featuring vintages that date back to the 1970s & even one that goes back to the 1950s, among other younger vintages. It has an aromatic & vegetal birth with notes of sugar & earth; while a bold life adds notes of spicy oak, dried fruit & light smoke; that led to a long & complex finish. June 2017 / April 2018
About this bottle
If you see a bottle of Rhum Clément X.O., buy it without hesitation. This gem from Martinique is no longer being produced, and will soon be replaced with another marque. Why? Because the 1952 vintage that is so key to its flavor profile has finally run out (It also includes rhums from 1970 and 1976). A beautiful example of the French style.

Not sure if I have this version. One word to describe it: pretty. Highly refined and complex, multi-layered. I don't think it is grassy. More of being floral. Reminded me of gentle Highland/Speyside Scotch. Different from what you think of rum. But a great one. Highly recommend
Did my opinion about rum just change? I think it did... Really amazing thing I feel lucky to have had a chance to try! Had at TOTC 2016. Panel: When is Rum Not a Rum?
Licorice, oak, tobacco, overripe fruit, this is one of my first endeavors in aged rum and it’s a lot to take in. There’s an odd aftertaste I’m not accustomed to.
Smell: bubblegum and some baking spice. Slight alcohol. Taste: a little bit of bubblegum, very woody in some spots in the mouth but doesn't take over. Balanced.
First tried in St. Barts on a trip with Lisa and Karen. Hard to find. Found it in London. Bought it in St. Thomas.
