About this bottle

Familia Camarena Reposado is a 100% agave tequila. The agave piñas or centers are hand harvested and typically weigh more than 100 pounds. The piñas are slow roasted in traditional stone ovens for several days before the juices are fermented and distilled. This reposado is aged for 60 days in American oak barrels before bottling.

Rating: 9/23 N: Dry and kind of thin with some bitterness that leads a tad into ethanol. Hints of stewed agave, pepper, and herbal character. Very light hints of mint. P: There's an immediate bite, with not much flavor, then light stewed agave sweetness, hints of mint, and a big pepperiness. Hints of vanilla. Actually, more vanilla than mint. Possibly very faint yuzu. There's clean water with a very faint vegetal flavor that's...maybe a tad off? F: Light, lingering pepper and burn. Gestures of agave sweetness. Actually, maybe a little more than that. Definitely pepper and very faint yuzu. - Conclusion - This is not very good. There's nothing way out there in this profile, but it's light and has too much alcohol presence without being very interesting. This is also a case of the reposado being that unfortunate middle child, losing the interest of the blanco, while still being light. I'm not sure that this is as low as a 9 though. It's certainly not an 8. It's certainly not a 12 though. I'm kind of thinking 10, but it really needs to be below Camarena Silver (10/23). Eh, that burn is a bit too strong. This has a stronger burn than the blanco, but it also has a more approachable flavor. I think this will be a 9.

Wow, a huge punch of smooth vanilla and sweetness on the nose. A small amount of agave can be found, but if you told me this was a flavored tequila, I would believe you just based on the smell. Salt is the first flavor I get on the tongue, then agave and a bit of wood together, then a much stronger hit of salt and agave for the finish. This definitely is on the lower side of barrel flavor for a reposado, but if you think of just the unaged product and what's there, you'll see the agave notes are above average for a good, sipping and not to mention a great, easy margarita tequila.

On the nose, the tequila features the light scents of vanilla and cinnamon beneath the much stronger scents of agave and the oak cask. On the tongue, the tequila starts a little sweet with the distinct taste of the agave as well as a sweet vanilla flavor. The body of the taste mellows out into the wood of the cask which becomes a bitter finish. Good, not phenomenal, but it should be a fairly good base for cocktails.

Good tequila for the price, and a solid entry reposado. There is a slight alcohol bite up front, which quickly fades into a nice toasted agave flavor, with a hint of cinnamon spice. This is a reposado that boxes a good full class above it's weight.

3.5 Got this for frozen margarita machines at a chili cookoff. Sampled a neat shot first to make sure it was good. OMG.. Two more neat shots before starting the mixing. Fabulous!

I’m primarily a bourbon drinker so this tequila is a good transition to tequila in my opinion. It gives the smokiness of tequila with a light sweetness of the barrel.
