A unique whiskey that has a gentle wood-forward entry. Delicate and still self assured, the blend of agings have a cohesiveness that still allows each to shine. Most notably, the various barrels have made their mark on the final product, leaving notes of oak, light berry, young tobacco, brown bread, baking spice and tea. The mouthfeel is medium heavy with a roundness carried by the high notes. At the end of the long finish, there is a soft fade into light rye spice. A true artistic expression, we highly recommend this latetst release from Kentucky Owl.
About this bottle
Kentucky Owl Takumi Edition was made in collaboration with Master Blenders John Rhea from Kentucky Owl and Yusuke Yahisa from Japan's Nagahama Distillery -- Takumi means "master" in Japanese. Rhea selected and sent over samples of Kentucky straight bourbons with different ages and mash bills to Japan where Yahisa created different blends to reflect his Japanese whiskey style. The final blend includes bourbons aged 4, 5, 6, and 13 years. This release is the second limited edition bottling from the brand and the fourth release under Rhea's leadership. Available as of October 2022.

I know you shouldn’t factor price into a review, but when you ask ~$120 for a bottle, you open yourself up for additional assessment. This whiskey is good. It’s slightly herbal with a creamy texture. It is slightly cloying on the palate. A little spicy apricot presence too. With all that being said, it shouldn’t be $120. I know the brand is riding the coattails of its fabled success, but the stuff is not up to the same par. I liked Confiscated more than this, and that is also notoriously overpriced. Save your cash.
So lets get this out of the way first. This is absolutely not worth $150. No way and no how. In todays market $60. The label is striking but you arent buying a label. Inside the bottle, i get a lot of pepper on the palette. Its not hot loke a bad whiskey would be but extremely peppery. Maybe a bit of an herbal note on the finish. I like it but wouldnt find myself buying another bottle. Would definitely be something a bit different on your shelf but better tasted with someone elses bottle.
Very nutty and woody nose. Woody / oaky from beginning to end. Trying to find other components that I like. It’s hot and spicy. Searching for the fruity or sweetness to balance it out. I thought the St Patrick’s edition was better. Might need to let it air out and revisit it later. It’s certainly good, but not great. Don’t regret the buy just might grab a different bottle next time
Very smooth mouthfeel with a bit of spice on the back end. Really nice dram but if I were looking at Kentucky Owl Confiscated vs Takumi, for the relatively same price point I do prefer the oakiness of Confiscated more than this offering. Really nice bourbon and a really nice looking label/bottle and for 50% ABV it goes down very easily...perhaps too easily?
Very hot alcohol in the aroma followed by corn, baking spice, vanilla, and mayne some light caramel. Very spicey flavor, with light corn and vanilla coming through after. Maybe some light tobacco notes as well. Thin bodied and slightly astringent finish. Faint baking spice lingers. @aboutbeverages
