First stop on a World Whisky Day tour of 10 countries was Finland, home to this well-regarded rye. The nose is malty, like warm crusty bread. The dominant flavor is gingerbread, with a dry finish. It’s very different from U.S. ryes, and while it’s tasty I’m not sure I’d pick it over a good MGP or Wild Turkey. Still, it’s a small, young distillery that’s worth watching and supporting.
About this bottle
The first batch of single malt rye whisky from Kyrö was released in late 2017 with only 360 bottles produced. It is made from 100% Finnish whole grain rye and is aged just over 3 years in new American oak barrels. It is then transferred to first-fill bourbon before finishing in ex-Marsala wine barrels. The first batch had an ABV of 47.8%, but expect subsequent batches to vary on this point.

Tasted the new Core Malt Rye. It is my favourite whiskey. I find a drop of water and letting it breathe for 2 minutes really opens up the whiskey. You can really smell a loaf of rye when nosing a dram afterwards. Not basic, not complex, very easy drinking. I’ve yet to try making a manhattan with it because I’ve enjoyed it so much straight (with that drop of water).
Nice ginger, citruss with honey sweetness nose.vanilla. Palate: nice spicy, peppery sweet rye. It reminded me some Canadian rye whiskeys. Our neighbours are doing good whiskey and I know they like heavy drinks. Tried Batch 8, 47,2%.
100% rye is a surprise, smell like Xeres Orocoso. Strong enough in mouth, a little cold must be it went from Finlande. Very unique.
Bananabread, spices, dried fruit, butterscotch, vanilla, oak, dried herbs, roasty notes. Splendid rye!
Vanilla nose. Butterscotch and cinnamon taste. High in alcohol
