About this bottle

Like all Old Forester Bourbon, this Single Barrel version is made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. Each bottle of Old Forester Single Barrel comes from one individual barrel. These hand-selected barrels are managed by Master Taster Jackie Zykan. Each single barrel can yield ~200 bottles per barrel. Bottled at 100 proof.

My bottle is a Master Distiller’s Select Nose: A deep banana cream pie jumps out of the glass and is followed by nilla wafer, caramel, chocolate covered marshmallows, and a hint of cherry and sweet cinnamon spice. Palate: The front of the palate is one in the same of the nose. I get unripe banana, shortbread cookie, vanilla crème, and browned butter. The sweetness is followed by a nice baking spice, a more pronounced cherry than found on the nose, and a very nice chocolate covered marshmallow/pretzel note that reminds me of modjeskas. It’s not thin but it’s not as viscous as I would hope for. Very deserty bourbon and I enjoy it very much. Finish: The finish is light, with not much oak presence and is just a soft fade of the flavors listed above. This is probably the biggest area that needs improvement for the whiskey. Final Rating: 8.6/10

🥃 #StewardSelect — Four New Old Forester Barrels Have Landed Our newest Old Forester Single Barrel releases are here, and this lineup covers it all — from the balanced, drinkable 100 Proofs to the bold and beautiful Barrel Strengths. All hand-selected by our team, and each one a distinct expression of Old Forester’s character, depth, and personality. 🟤 Old Forester Single Barrel — 100 Proof Rick K1 — 100 Proof Bright and racy in the glass. Fresh and citrusy. Aromas of low-cooked sugar, focused and linear. Fresh cherry pops and spreads out nicely. Into the mid-palate, it plushes out wonderfully. Adds notes of roasted cashew and cinnamon. Such a great, pretty texture. This is grippy but also generous, with dried apple and a classic cherry finish, with a rounded, soft texture all the way through.

Floor 3 from Warehouse I 90 proof Nose: Cloves, vanilla, oak, peppermint, Tangerine, caramel (with air time). Palate: Orange marmalade, cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla, peppermint, with a touch of lemon. Finish: Oily with fading peppermint. Primarily a spice and fruit driven palate with a few candied notes. It was a little of a disappointment because I had a wonderful Single Barrel sample (from a different barrel) a few weeks prior to working through this bottle. While it was a bit of a let down, it was decent. It also highlights the difference’s between single barrels. While I would not purchase a bottle again from this particular barrel, I would definitely try another.

Nose has great oak, brown sugar and sugary coffee creamer and a touch of banana laffy taffy. Palate brings cherry coke, granulated white sugar, banana runts and brown sugar. Finish is oak dominated and brings some clove and sweet caramel that stays with you for a nice mellow chest warm filled with some nice pecan and cinnamon flavors. Before Jackie Zychan bolted from Old Forester she mentioned that the 100 proof barrels were short barrels. This was a total wine pick from warehouse G which I believe is one of 2 warehouses that does not have heat cycling. It's best attribute is how balanced it is across the sip bringing great oak, sweetness and spice.

Jeff's Spirits 250th Anniversary Warehouse K, floor 8. Dark copper color with a faint hint of Amber. Small number of slow forming legs. Nose reveals that it's definitely an Old Forester product. Good rye presence with plenty of spice. Dark caramel, both ripe and tart fruits. A little hint of cardboard in there and a bit of a hit of ethanol. Some sweetness up front, but it wanders a bit and the sweetness doesn't linger long enough. A little butterscotch candy comes out. mouthfeel is a little bit thin, but there is a solid length finish that shows lots of wood. It comes up short in balance... All the flavors are there, but it's a little disjointed.
