Redwood Empire Cask Strength Lost Monarch is one of three limited edition bottlings featuring uncut and unfiltered whiskeys of the distillery's core portfolio. Lost Monarch is its "ryebon" offering, a blend of straight rye and straight bourbon whiskeys. The make up here is 55% rye (94% rye, 5% malted barley, 1% wheat) and 45% bourbon (74% corn, 20% rye, 4.5% malted barley, 1.5% wheat). The whiskeys featured here were aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of three years and up to 14 years. Since they were aged in the California fog belt, the cask strength proof of 117.2 is lower than many other such offerings of similar makeup. Copper color. On the nose I get cinnamon apples, vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle, and faint wintergreen. The mouthfeel is heavy and warm. On the palate I get black tea, toasted cinnamon stick, spearmint leaves and a hint of coffee. The finish is medium-long with more black tea and spearmint, along with cinnamon, clove and some black pepper. The bottle says this is at least 3 years old but it tastes much older.
Nose is apricot, raspberry and rye spice with vanilla, oak and a black tea note. Contrary to the expert review, there is plenty to smell. Palate is spicy cinnamon, cherry, cloves and apple pie with wood, vanilla and pepper. It mellows with a few drops of water. Long baking spice finish with mint coming in to add a savory note. Very good.
Suprisingly good! Get smore flavors (graham cracker, toasted marshmellow) and baking spices. Very pleasant, good buy at the price point as well

Chocolate notes on the front, smooth for 117 proof and young. Tasty
