About this bottle

Sam Houston 12 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon is made from a high-rye mash bill and aged for 12 years in new, charred American white oak barrels with a #4 char level. The barrels were selected by the team at Bardstown Bourbon Co. with just three barrels selected for each batch and each state that it's sold in gets its own batch. For the second release announced in May 2019, availability has expanded to Kentucky, Illinois, New York, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, DC. These markets join Texas and Tennessee which received the first batch as well. Note: Review is for Tennessee Batch No. 2

VA Release After a long pause, tons of legs form and move with speed. Its more bronze than brass, it definitely shows its age... Nose is heavy vanilla... Notes of banana bread, subtle clove. Not very big in the mouth... It is intensely rich with flavor despite the initial warmth and the dryness with which it finishes. Its sweet, bur so well balanced, that i would not use it as the prima6 descriptor. Some notes of chocolate and cherry. Its got excellent complexity and a very long finish. The dark chocolatey finish is memorable. This is a seriously complex, nuanced and delicious bourbon. Personally, I like a bit more sweetness to come out through the finish... But that's just my personal preference. This is awesome

TN-2; 12yrs 11 mos. Not as complex as the reviews seem to imply. I can see why another 2 years for the 14 might be the ticket. Fruity on the nose, tastes of vanilla, cherry, and spice. It’s good. But not $100+ good. The detail on the bottle and the idea, however, is cool. Not disappointed I bought it. But it will likely sit on the shelf for a while.

Corn and burnt sugar nose. Very sweet and fruity up front, then woody oak and finally pepper in the end. This is made by Barton's, so essentially a 12 year old 1792 at 98 proof. Good but not remarkable enough to justify a $92 price tag, regardless of the 12 year label. Update, note, at last count this is going for $120.

The nose starts with cherry, leather, oak and vanilla. The palate is dry but mouth coating, with the cherry carrying over and mixing nicely with vanilla, along with oak, cinnamon and cream. The finish is medium long with a creamy oak that lingers along with fading cinnamon and vanilla.

Batch VA-2, batch size of 3 barrels. Aged for 12y4mo. Bottle 330 of 604. Pretty solid, loads of oak on the nose with hints of vanilla. Taste is lots of oak from the extended aging. Not sure it's worth $100/bottle, but I wouldn't turn it down if offered

Nose: vanilla and a touch of peanut? Flavors: Sweet vanilla with a touch of spice. Still some peanut flavor going on. Finish: Short and straight forward oak and vanilla.
