What's "hogo" you ask? This! In aromas and flavors. Aromas of petroleum distillates and tropical fruit esters -- think along the lines of ripe bananas and acetone (fingernail polish remover if you're my wife reading this, LOL). It has that funky flavor we think of with Jamaican hogo. Sweetness is subtle, so if looking for a sweet mixer you'll need to add some form of sugar to it. It has that young rum taste. A small ice cube brings out the banana aroma and tones down the hogo. However, the hogo flavor appears more pronounced. Want a memorable mixer? This will cover it. Wake up your rum palette? Take a sip. Are you a scotch fan and exploring rum? Think of this as the peat whisky version of rum in that it's boldly different...a marmite rum if you will. (No, it's not smoky.) I like the labeling, reminds me of American-traditional tattoos. Rating based on neat sipping.

If you drink rum..don't get this. If you want to taste funky crafted rum? Get this. You really need to drink a variety of rum to appreciate the quality of this pot still beauty. I have to say the smell is difficult to accept at first.. but a few deep sniffs to find the alcohol, sip and exhale.. wow! Mineral water, pot still elegance, sea salt, delicate cane sugar, soft barrel char and sweet fruit. But the fruit is entirely up to you to find. Banana, sure, but ripe. Strawberry, yea I find it. Tart. Pineapple, mhmm. It's all about getting OVER that smell, nothing can really compare. It's very well crafted and layered in flavor. It's really a top shelf experience and VERY unique.

Supposedly up to 6YR Worthy Park product with additional aging in Moscatel casks in Detroit. However, the aroma and yellow gold color tell a possibly different story. Initial aroma is of flagrant diesel and alcohol, hogo, animal, salts, and charcoal. A young smelling rum, though woody. The aroma mellows to gros michel banana, tomato leaf, sea salt, and cane grass as time passes. This could be aged locally before importing. Sweeter on the palate with the sherry driving a honeyed-vanilla finish. A sugary, melon-like, sweetness lingers. Very fun stuff

Smell: rotting/over ripe banana, strong ethanol/rubber smell (like it a perfume strong) [god the alcohol smell is strong], maybe vanilla?,  Snifter: a bit grassy, still has banana taste, still has high ethanol taste, maybe some pineapple?,  On ice: ethanol/rubber taste is a lot more mellow, grassy notes are more apparent, overripe banana taste is still around, def some spices (maybe clove?),  Verdict: Try it, it is such a unique flavor that honestly puts me in a rollercoaster of flavors/taste but still enjoyable throughout

The funkiest barrel tastes I have ever gotten on a rum- stewed tomatoes, over ripe pineapple, coconut butter, and soggy oaken barrel. Doctor Bird is not for the faint of heart. If you are not down with that funky, over ripe note, and a vegetable bite on the end, it will not be for you. For me, I found it a very strange yet fun rum. Definately not what I am used to

Love that Jamaica rum funk! Doctor Bird delivers that Hogo you see with overproof white Jamaica rum, but nicely toned down from the Moscatel Sherry cask aging. Tropical fruits especially bananas, raisin on the nose, nice caramel-y finish. For the price ($25 USD) I can’t find a better aged deliciously funky Jamaica rum right now.
